Why put plastic binding on high end Prestige?

Maybe it's just me, but I don't understand why they do this. Leave if off or use wood. Who want's to spend 1700 on a guitar with plastic as part of it's structure? I just think it cheapens the guitar.

What do you guys think?

Yes. I understand that. If they didn't sell, they wouldn't make them. I probably should have phrased the question differently. Something like "I can't understand why someone would spend that much on a guitar with plastic on it.

But hey, I'm just thinking out loud. If people did it, good for them. I just think it cheapens the brand a bit. Thankfully, Ibanez provides other options for those who want them.

As I wrote the post I was wondering who else was putting plastic on their higher end guitars. I'm sure there's more, too.

i don't mind plastic binding. as Rich said, les paul did too.
J custom's wood binding is nice, but as I still prefer plastic on my RG as it's the way 80 shred machine should be.
edit : I was referring to fingerboard and headstock binding.
I'm not a fan of body binding.

Re: Why put plastic binding on high end Prestige?

If your wanting a colored binding, why would you use wood? Then you have to paint it separately, or mask it once on the body and it really creates much more labor and the possibility of imperfect lines. I would prefer a bright white plastic around my edge that is also harder than wood.

Now if it's a faux wood - I would question it as well. Just my 2 cents...

Re: Why put plastic binding on high end Prestige?

I'm quite happy to see plastic binding, especially if it's pearloid like on the JEM10.

What I dislike is scraped binding. Is it binding or is it just the body wood...?

Also my pet peeve on things like PRS and Blackmachines is "half binding" where the body curves make binding a bit tricky, so they just stop at a convenient point...

Re: Why put plastic binding on high end Prestige?

I can live with it either way. My 2627ZE 7-string has a nice white binding on the neck and on the body. It adds a bit of nicety to an already fine instrument. My RRG4 J-Custom has a beautiful flamed-maple binding on it and that one speaks for itself. Either way, if it sounds great and plays even better, then the binding is a non-factor for me.

I prefer a bound neck and headstock. To me, it just feels smoother than rubbing on the raw wood. Also the fret ends are sealed off. I believe it takes a little brittleness out of the sound and makes it more dense or heavier if that makes sense. Just my ears I guess. Although I don't mind my unbound JEMs at all.
