Question Why should I hold out for a more expensive model? ...Convince me.

As the title suggests. I'm about ready to buy an Ibanez for around £350 but there is this argument that Japan made Ibanez guitars (I'm not familiar with all the models) are so much better and I want to know what the deal is.

Will I buy a £350 Ibanez guitar now and see it deteriorate greatly in quality in a year or two? Or will I be playing it and the action will be sucky/slow/too high?

Why are Ibanez prestiges, in particular, worth so much more? Are they really that much better?

(I have RG/RGA's in mind)

the prestiges really are better. take a good long look at the trems....they look different right? thats because they are. and thats really the main thing. the prestige trems are better, they last longer and theyre more stable. and if your lookin at a fixed bridge, then the prestige tight end bridge has more sustain and is better quality than the gibralter standard on the indonesian fixed bridge's. and quality wise, the prestiges will last longer because there was a lot more time put into the craftsmanship, the woods, how everythings put together and how well and carefully theyre inspected

but theres nothing "bad" on the indonesian guitars. theyre just not up to par with the japanese prestiges just yet. they can still sound amazing however. and some have been known to sound better than the most expensive prestige. play a couple from both countrys in your rig. see which sounds better first. the lower quality can always be upgraded later. and as for the action, theres really no huge difference. its all about how far down you put it

For your budget you could get a MIJ or prestige (started in 2001, just MIJ with better finishes, fret details etc.) used on these classifieds! Used guitars are conditioned better, and you don't need to break them in.

I'd say fit and finish are a big part of it - the little details - and I think it's fair to say that you see something of a range in ALL of the different 'levels' of instruments.
Some of them might be 'Monday morning/Friday afternoon' ones... even at the 'F' factory.
I for one have been so impressed by the recent Indo quality that I adopted one as a little bit of a project. I played 3 specimens, and two of them completely blew me away - the 3rd seemed like I would want to 'massage' it first before making a determination. But the other 2 were inspiring right off the hook.
I grabbed the second of those two.

To put this in perspective... I have a decent group of Japanese Ibanez (Jems, Universes, RG7s, RG1527s, Radius) to hold up as yardsticks to these.

Just my thoughts on this =]

as I said before, any money spent on an Ibanez that doesn't come from Ibanez rules is wasted.

Im still a little skeptical about buying used though. I dont want to recieve a guitar that has dust/gunk in all those hard to reach places. There is a mental aspect to it that i know may sound silly, but cant be ignored. Or do people with prestige models trea them likeprestige and keep them clean?

If you can hold out a little longer the 2011 range of new models will be out. Most Indonesian models will come with the new Edge Zero 2 trem which from all reports is a quality trem. Plus you may also be able to afford one of the new Premium range of Indonesian guitars, which look real hot.

lol.... not a bad idea!! I'm really hoping to land one of the 920's, or maybe even one of the JC's-- but that will require some selling off.

350 pounds brings you to that iffy "mid range" level.

They arent "Crap", but they arent "good" either.

For that amount, I feel its more prudent to get a slightly lower model (the rg350dx is actually pretty sweet!) and upgrading the pickups. The 350 plays pretty damn good, and with new pickups, would be a sweet guitar.

Actually, there is a guy on my CL that is putting a Prestige 1520 up (mirage red) for 520, He has a couple pics, condition seems good, he knows what he's talking about, and has a good collection of ibbies. I've seen 3120s go for 400 before, in player+ cond..
