Why so much more love for the old Rg550's vs the old 560's?

I've owed a couple of both and really have no real preference for one over the other except for the maple board that is easier to find with a 550 than a 560.
But I have noticed that the 550's seem to be much more in demand than the 560's and I wonder why that is?
Is it the abundance of 550's with maple fretboards VS the majority of the 560's having rosewood, or is it the H/S/H VS H/S/S or a combination of the 2?
I'd love to find a 560 with a maple fret board, but I'm OK with the one I have with Rosewood.
thoughts?

I will choose 560 ANY DAY over a 550.

Me too, but I think the majority of Ibanez players prefer the look and versatility of the 550 over the 560. I'm an HSS player but I have to admit that pickup choices are a lot easier with a full size hum in the neck.

I think it most has to do with the maple board that has a perceived value. You could say the same about 570's vs 550's. Try to buy just a neck and the maple boards bring more money.

It's gone in cycles to be honest. 15 or so years ago the 570s were the rage, you had to have that rear routed body to be a cool kid. Then the 550s became the ones to go for, presumably because it's closer to the original JEM777 in design.

The 560 with its HSS design has always been the odd cousin, with many prolific posters preferring the HSH design of the other two. If I had to put money on it, I'd say that it's the neck single coil that is seen as,the weak spot on the 560 compared to the other 500 series guitars, but it's exactly that same neck single coil that sets it apart as the one to have for others.

^^ Yeah, I imagine that most people prefer a humbucker in the neck position.

I wonder if Ibanez made more 550's than 560's. There seems to be alot more 550's for sale than 560's. Or is it no one wants to part with their 560? ^ ^

For me, it's simply that my first-ever "real" guitar was a maple-board RG550... back in 1990. I put it on layaway (remember layaway?), then worked at Dairy Queen for months to finally pay it off and take it home.

It was my only guitar for the 8 years after that... till I made the biggest mistake of my life and sold it--to a guy who eventually destroyed it >.<

So, the old 550's will always be my favorite.

Same here with an Aria Pro. Brought the guy 25-30 bucks a week until it was paid. Little mom and pop music store. He'd let me play it a little each week. I was 15 and working in a pizzeria.

Me too....... took me almost a full year to pay off an RG770 in 1990. I worked as a porter in a new car dealership. It was excruciating trying to pay it off at $3.15 an hour.........LOL

I guess it boils down to sales numbers maybe? I have no clue why Ibanez long ago abandoned the HSS pickup scheme. I find it hard to believe it's a sales thing since other guitar companies like Jackson and ESP have sold HSS guitars for a while and continue to do so.
There's a jewel blue RG1560 spec model floating around with a maple board that is absolutely gorgeous (I think someone here owns it) but AFAIK it hasn't been in production in a while.
There's lots of HSS Prestige guitars on the Japanese Ibanez site so go figure.

Both Jesse and I have the 1560M's- thanks man!

It has to be about what the distributors think will/can sell. As Rich has said before, if they thought they could sell the HSS guitars here in the states- we would get them.

As Ryc says, I have one of the RG1560JB's. It was a spot production model in 2010. You can find them floating around from time to time. I swapped the maple board neck with a different guitar, so mine has a rosewood board, like an original 560.

I own a RG2560 but would choose a RG560 over a RG550.

Re: Why so much more love for the old Rg550's vs the old 560's?

I had a 1993 550CA and 1990 560... I still have the 560, sold the 550 for an RG580. I never bonded with the 550, as much as I played it. The 560 stays because it works better for me. It's my poor man's AT100. I love having a single coil in the neck at times, it is easier to handle the output versus the Humbucker in the bridge (AT1 vs cruiser bridge in the neck). If I sell any of my Ibanezes, it won't be my 560 (my 2550 isn't even safe compared to the 560). The best part is, my 560 is purple neon
