Will I degrade the value of my 540r if...

guitar is in near mint condition after my restoration.... BUT

1) I hate the pickups
2) I HATE the push/push pot....
3) Hardware is mint, but I think cosmo hardware would be cooler

Would I be remiss to swap parts out? I can keep the originals, but swapping out the pots would be an irreplaceable activity, at least nothing I'd want to do in a sale. Pickup swaps are simple enough I suppose...

Thinking ->
Tone zone bridge, area 67 middle, injector neck, I have a bunch of cosmo hardware lyin around...

I dont want this to be a collectors item in a few years, especially in its condition with backstop AND OHSC from 1987.... do you guys see this being a "collectors item" in the future? No intention of sale, as I have finally bonded with the ultra neck, and I have a hard time putting it down, just wish it were a little more refined to my tastes. Decisions, decisions. lol

Re: Will I degrade the value of my 540r if...

I could be wrong but from all the 540 family, the 'R' is the one that got overlooked.
People praised the S and highly value the P, but forget about the R..
If I were you, I'll do it.
I think as long as you don't refinish it, it'd keep its value.

Last week a stripped (bare wood - no finish) 540R went for $350 on ehay.

Re: Will I degrade the value of my 540r if...

i bid on that one... i wasnt going over 150 on it though....

i say go for it! even if it increases in value you can always put the other pups back in, and rewire it... no problem.

remember they sold for like 900 new back in the day.... they still have a long way to go to hit their break even point..... but i love mine and wont ever sell my 540RHHBK. now my 542R that is a different story still not bonded with the maple board.....

I dont think your sitting on a gold mine... Its not going to be worth 20k in 20 years time, so I think your safe to mod

Re: Will I degrade the value of my 540r if...

There are very few non-signature models that really realize much value. One of the few I've seen is the 540P, but I think that's because it was so strange that very few sold and they're now rare. The RG550 also gets good value for what it is.

This guitar, I'd say you're safe to mod. Nothing you're planning involves the body or finish anyway.

Re: Will I degrade the value of my 540r if...

Point taken

I dont plan on ever selling this guitar, so the point is probably moot, but it IS a rare breed, and IS in near mint condition with all the goodies. Id just hate to hack it up, and find out a few years later it doubles in value haha.

Allright. In goes new electronics. Figure 25 year old pots and pickups are getting tired anyway, I'll keep them around I guess.

Re: Will I degrade the value of my 540r if...

Being "rare" doesn't mean anything. Desire is the only thing that drives prices of guitars. There could be a top notch guitar out there that originally sold for $1000 with only 20 made and won't get even half that on the used market, whereas another guitar that had the same $1000 new price with 300 made could fetch $1500 on the used market. It's all about how many people want those guitars.

Granted, that's not the only factor, but it it the first factor of a guitars resale value.

Two common misconceptions in the guitar world are:
1. It's rare so it must be worth a lot.
2. It's old so it must be worth a lot.

Sorry to say that those are not always true, and in more cases they're not true.

Re: Will I degrade the value of my 540r if...

To go along with that point, most Jems are not really rare are all in terms of total production volumes yet many fetch prices greater than they originally sold for. I just paid well over the original price for a GMC and there were apparently 364 of those made. There are many other Ibanez guitars that sold way fewer than 364 copies and aren't worth a fraction of what the Jem is. LNG's are very valuable and they made 777 of those.

Look through ebay and you'll find all sorts of people who think their guitars are worth a lot because they perceive them as rare.

Re: Will I degrade the value of my 540r if...

Sorry if I'm bumping this thread a little, but I was thinking of changing the bridge pickup to an X2N on my '87 540R, but don't want to degrade the value. Lately, I've been having problems with the bridge pickup temporarily losing some output and such.
