Wizard vs Ultra necks

Iím not sure if I have ever played on a Wizard neck, I hear they are even thinner than the Ultras and that could be fun. Plus I like the 24 frets and sharktooth inlays...what do you prefer and why?
Are the RG series Wizard necks not that great? And lastly would one fit properly on my 540R (no AANJ)

Thanks!

Re: Wizard vs Ultra necks

I prefer wizard's over all. Very fast necks when setup and even better unfinished. Yeah you should be able to find one for your guitar.

You're not getting a 24-fret RG neck on a 540R without serious mods, no. Pre-AANJ RGs had a fretboard extension that had the 23rd and 24th or so frets hanging off the end of the neck and the body had a special route between the neck pocket and the neck pickup to fit this extension. AANJ necks don't have the extension, but that means that the 24th fret ends up right at the bottom of the neck pocket, which is where your 22nd fret presently is. Clearly this wouldn't even begin to intonate properly.

Re: Wizard vs Ultra necks

I have the Ultra on the USAC and the Viper on the SV, both are thicker than the Wizard, and I like that.

I played the RG20064 and it had them Prestige Wizards or whatever they're called. It was a really good neck, but it felt so empty and small in my hands. The ultra.. gives me life.

I've never played an Ultra, so I can't really compare, but I know for sure that I like Wizards. Old ones, new ones, doesn't really matter to me, they're all great in their own way.

Based on that (and the fact that you can never have too many guitars), I support your plan wholeheartedly.

Re: Wizard vs Ultra necks

The more and more I play Wizards, I've noticed that I seem to prefer the thicker necks. The wizard neck seems too small for my hands, and they really make my thumb sore, as I'm constantly having to press down more on the back of the neck to hold it. With a thicker neck, I can just let it rest in my hand without much gripping.

With that said, the Wizards are great, just not exactly my cup of tea. I would like to see a neck like the JS but with a flatter radius.

Re: Wizard vs Ultra necks

I had a 540R with a Ultra. While it is much fatter than a wizard, it's still thinner than a lot of necks. But more traditional. Rounder fretboard radius and not as wide.

Re: Wizard vs Ultra necks

Jems, Ultras and Wizards all have a 430mm fretboard radius.

Wizard II and III are 400mm

That pic looks like the Ultra has more radius. And the 540R I had with the Ultra was a bit more curved than my S wizard.

Who knows. You can never believe Ibanez's specs.
