Question Wizard or Wizard II How do I know?

I have an MIJ AANJ neck, which is stamped RG-550R#2
Does this mean it is a Wizard II?

What year neck is it? If it is a 550 it is most likely a wizard.

It is a 1997. The serial is F9754086
I don't know what the neck originally came off, as it was attached to a black RG420 body when I got it.

I'm pretty certain it's a Wizard.

Re: Wizard or Wizard II How do I know?

I thought they stopped making the original Wizards back in 91 or 92? All I know is that I have one for sure and couldn't be happier about it. How about some pics from a side angle?

They still make Wizard necks today. Look at the specs on the charts in that link and compare them to the specs on the Ibanez website.

RG550 has always had a Wizard neck.

Re: Wizard or Wizard II How do I know?

Thanks for the replies. I thought it was a Wizard, but I haven't played a Wizard II. Since it wasn't connected to the original body, I wasn't sure.

The only way to tell is to play early '90's RG's and compare the neck thickness. If it's a little thicker, it's a Wizard II.

Re: Wizard or Wizard II How do I know?

Wizard II is also slightly rounder, that's probably what makes it a little thicker. You can tell the difference side by side.

Wizard twos are quite a bit larger on the bass side than the treble side, as well as most commonly being found only on korean ibanez's.

Re: Wizard or Wizard II How do I know?

A 1997 Wizard neck will have the bubinga strip down the center of the back.

97 or later SN# + no strip = Wizard 2.

The RG-550R#2 stamp may also indicate the nut size? R2 = 42.86mm. Just a guess on the R#2.

Without a question, you have a Wizard neck there and again all RG550 guitars came with a Wizard neck.

Yes, but I've seen Japanese RG470 necks with 550 stamped on the inside which were not Wizard 1 profile. The SN# being 1997, if it has bubinga is a sure way to tell, all stamps aside.

Re: Wizard or Wizard II How do I know?

No, it doesn't have the bubinga stripe. It is very thin, so I thought it was a wizard. I don't have another to compare it to right now.
