Is it worth it?

I've been offered an RG3210 with the lo=pro and side dots in a trade for my RG1527 but I'm not sure if it's worth it, theres some chips in the underside of the RG (see pics http://s76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/twooos/ ) and this is a PM he sent me regarding the condition etc.

The neck was self shimmed by me with a little piece of cardboard, i just loosened the neck joint a little bit, and then slid the cardboard in. The neck had the gloss sanded off by a tech, which means faster playing, and no residue/stickiness.

Ill be honest, the conditions of the frets arnt too good, but nothing to cause any defects in playing. I mean, what do you expect from a 8/9 year old guitar?

But, it plays beautifully, and will be good profit when and if you decide to sell it in the long run.

Oh yeah and ive also done the little nail varnish trick (under the tremolo arms plastic white bushings) to stop the whammy bar flying around as it was annoying the hell out of me, but come on, everyone does that, but ill remove it if you want.

I guess if i went for it I'd need to get the frets done, or could i do that myself?

Any thoughts?

Re: Is it worth it?

I wouldn't do it. The 3120 is a decent guitar but it's nothing special. I would rather have a 1527 any day.

Re: Is it worth it?

bad frets is always a dealbreaker for me. refretting is not something you want to do if you've never done it before (especially on a decent guitar) and they are usually not so cheap either. if he wants to do the trade plus $150 to cover the fretjob then maybe it'd be worth it, but there's still the hassle of finding a competent luthier to do it. if you really want a 3120, just watch e-bay, they are on there all the time and many are in decent condition.

Re: Is it worth it?

Im not sure why he thinks a dinged up 3120 that needs a refret is a good investment in the long run.

What condition is your 1527 in? Unless its atleast equally beat, I'd steer clear of the deal, but that's just what I would do.

Re: Is it worth it?

I asked if he would add some money but he said he wouldn't as the 3210 would increase in value (? okay...) also my 1527 is basically mint and has dimarzios in it.

Re: Is it worth it?

hmm, it's a better guitar (imo) but maybe not worth as much money. I would do it but most people wouldn't.

No it won't. If you ever want a 3120, get one shipped from the US like I did. 350 / $700 should get you a very good one.

Re: Is it worth it?

Well if he's not gonna either have the frets seen to himself or give me some money to do the same, I'll tell him the deals off.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Re: Is it worth it?

Im still wondering why it would "only increase in value". They arent collectable by any means.

Re: Is it worth it?

I'm assuming it was just a line to jusify him not adding any money to the deal.

Re: Is it worth it?

I guess no one bothered to check the pics for themselves... ???

The frets are fine and will last many years depending on playtime - the guy is just being honest telling you not to expect an unplayed guitar.
There's absolutely no discolouration on the back of the neck which on a sanded neck means very little play indeed - my necks show staining after 6 months or so.
There isn't any tarnishing or discolouration of the hardware either - this guitar has seen very little playtime.

The only thing to worry about is the big chip (see pics - link in first post), without the chip the 3120 is the better guitar, with it - it's about an even trade.
1527 is vanilla - the equivalent to 1550, 3120 listed at twice the price of 550 when it was on sale.

Both guitars will struggle to bring 400 on evilbay (not sure what the Euro price will be in NI) here in the UK and this is an even trade any way you look at it.
If you rather have a 6 stringer - go for it.

p.s. - the 3120 comes with DiMarzio's from the factory so having after market DiMarzio's in yours makes you even.

That's how I was seeing it, if there's no others on sale cheaper then I would have no worries trading a new $1500 guitar for an 8 year old $3000 one.
