Would it be sacriligious to...

Would it be sacrilegious to turn my old 550 into an HH and take out the middle single coil? I've been putting A LOT of thought into getting a Carvin lately (and I DO want one at some point, such nice guitars) but I'm thinking that in order to save some money to change my 550 into an HH guitar and add mini switches for coil tap. I would have a new pickguard made for this and I will add the extra holes for the coil taps but I worry that I would be doing a makeover to such a revered instrument

It's a 550, not a Jem LNG.

LOL

Why take the single coil out? Just leave it in and rewire it the way you like.
Personally I wouldn't as I like the split positions for clean playing, but an rg550 isn't some rare bird. There are "a few" of them out there.

Painting a Bugatti Veyron Pink might get your ass kicked, but modding an rg550 is not going to cause political upheaval.

Hell, if you wanted to route a compartment into a DNA for a PEZ Dispenser, it's none of anyone else's business what you do to your guitar.

Thats the thing though. I have 3 other guitars with the same pickup setup and they give me amazing clean in split. I want to do something special with this guitar... But if it means i can save money and just rewire the pups and drop the S1 into the body as low as it will go, I'm all for that

Just go wild man, Hendrix burned dozen of Strats on the stage and if that wasn`t a sacrilege then removing one pickup won`t be either

Just lower the pickup all the way and rewire.

I think this is what I'm going to do. At least this time I'll take it into the shop but starting next month, I'm going to practice soldering myself so I can do it on my own. If I can learn how to do it myself, I can do whatever I want and not be worried about if anyone screws it up. This month not enough money

Personally, I would copy what Taylor guitars does! Replaceable pick guards! When Ibby puts out a Sky Blue or Ice Blue Jem with maple fretboard, that's when I will give Paradise Pickguards a lot of business

Yeah, that's really all you have to do. Just rewire it.
You could also wire the 2,3 and 4 position to combine/split coils too and get more of a tele-like sound. Lots of different sounds to explore.

Re: Would it be sacriligious to...

Just get a new H-H pickguard and load it with whatever pickups and electronics you want. You can always put the original back in if you choose.

No harm-no foul.........

The issue isnt that so much as it is money. If I can survive with dropping the middle single all the way down and just use the humbuckers as is, then it'll cost considerably less. I cant even remember the various sites I've seen with custom pickguards so I dont even know where to look anymore

Re: Would it be sacriligious to...

There's a reason why perle makes them
Personally I find the middle pickup worthless on these. On a Strat maybe because the whole thing is so weak but RG I have no need for a pick interfering middle pickup

Re: Would it be sacriligious to...

Oh but this begs a different question...
Is THIS sacrilege ?
I HAD to do this I was tired of that awful tube jack nonsense. This way it's metal beefy and I can use a regular old Switchcraft in there

Re: Would it be sacriligious to...

I just left the middle pickup out on my 550 and used push/pull pots wired like a js. Paf in the neck and an evo in the bridge...works great.

Did you order that one through perle? Is it just a flat black? How much did it cost you?
