Year that RG750 Came Out

Ok Ibanez gurus...what is the first production year for the RG 750? From what I see on the site and throughout the net, it would seem that it was 1989 but if the RG 550 came out in 1987 then wouldn't they have had their 'upper' end RG 750 as well?

When I look through the old Ibanez catalogues (online) I only see the RG 550 for 1987. So what's the deal?

Thanks folks!!

Re: Year that RG750 Came Out

Just testing the waters I'd guess. Afterall there were a LOT of additions in 87, maybe they thought that the 500 series would do the trick for a while till the noticed a bit of a gap in their own market?

Re: Year that RG750 Came Out

the 7xx came out in 1989. Same question as to why there was no 2550/3550 when the 1550 first came out
The 7xx were the extension and evolution of the RG5xx series. My guess would be that back in '87, the JEM's was the ONLY "upper-end" and succeeding that, was the RG5xx

Re: Year that RG750 Came Out

Ok, here is the discrepancy then. I have an RG 750 that I bought in 1989 when I was 16. The serial number on the headstock is not consistent with what I have seen in any forums.

This is what is generally accepted when looking at the serial number.

1987 to 1996 example serial number F232104
F=Fujigen
2=1992 as an example
3=March production So 1=Jan 12=Dec
2104 guitar built for that month 2104th made

Therefore, it is possible that what everyone thought was figured out for guitars between 1987 - 1996 may be incorrect?

Oh..this is serial number of my RG 750 that was bought in 1989
F755859
If you go by the nomenclature above, that means it was produced in 1987.

Maybe the last digit actual denotes the year of production? That would then make sense for my guitar.

Re: Year that RG750 Came Out

Can we see pics of your neck? Serial numbers don't lie, and Ibanez's numbering system is pretty consistent. That being said, neither of my 750s have serial numbers on their headstocks, both of those have serial numbers on their neckplates.

The earliest I've ever seen any RG7xx was in the '89 catalog.

You can't post em on Flickr and give us a link?

FAIL.

I'd really like to see your guitar. It's definitely sounding like an interesting anomaly.

Re: Year that RG750 Came Out

Dude! That's exactly the same as one of my 750s. Very nice.

Anyway, it's really a mystery. 24 fret bound sharktoof wizard necks aren't to be found in any catalog until 1988 for the USAC line. And RG7xxs usually have an Ibanez USA neck plate. VERY interesting. You have a guitar that was built a full two years before they were built. Maybe it travelled through time?

Re: Year that RG750 Came Out

Well, all I can say is this guitar has been with me since I (well..my mom and I) bought it brand new from Axe Music in Edmonton, AB (Canada) in 1989. I can't remember the month but I think it was possibly the summer. Anyways, I was 16 at the time and I had always borrowed guitars up to that point to learn/play with. My mom made me the deal that if I saved up half then she would contribute the other half. I worked after school, a few nights a week, at the local Co-op Gas Bar @ $4/hr to save up $600 (which meant I had $1200 to work with). So off we went to Edmonton to get me my 1st guitar. At that time I had liked the fluorescent colors of the Peaveys but figured we should visit a few more music stores to see what was out there. It's funny because the guitar that I was actually going to buy was the RG 550. My mom made the comment that she thought this one looked a little more finished (ie. rosewood, shark inlays, binding, etc.. etc..). So what the hell does a 16 year old know? I went with my mom's suggestion and picked this one. Got the case and a strap and that was all she wrote.

If you go by the nomenclature above, that means it was produced in 1987.
It only means the neck plate was made in '87.

Since guitars cannot generate their own worm holes through the fabric of space-time, no matter how loud they get, even if they are plaid, it is at the earliest a late 88 production, but more likely '89.
This kind of anomaly crops up every once in a while.
The easiest explanation for the '87 plate is that it got damaged at the distributor/dealer and they put an older replacement plate on.
Another, much less likely scenario would be that Fujigen ran out of 88 plates in december and 89 plates hadn't arrived yet.

EDIT: I see it's not even on the neck plate but a headstock sticker...hmmmm.
