Don't forget to unlock the locking studs.

Locking studs- meaning at the nut? Or are you referring to part of the bridge/tremolo unit?

Thanks for the info so far.

Nope, I'm referring to the small set screw in the studs/posts at the bridge.

Re: Allen wrench size for Bridge posts for RG520qs?

I have a Bench Wrench (from Allparts) with several allen wrench sizes, but none fit inside the bridge posts- do all Ibanez trems have these locking studs? Could the bridge posts be adjusted without unlocking the locking studs? I'm asking CAN it be done, not SHOULD. I happened to adjust the post height before I read the post about the locking studs.

They can not and should not. if a door is locked, forcing it open would only break it. You would very very likely destroy the anchors. The point of locking studs is so the studs will not move, if you force it, it will break, and likely permanently ruin your guitar by any repair.

TL;dR

DON'T DO IT!

Re: Allen wrench size for Bridge posts for RG520qs?

Thanks for the quick reply. The thing is, the posts moved easily- I had no sense that I was "forcing" anything- they felt just as I imagine they should, just the right amount of resistance.

Perhaps the locking studs weren't locked by the previous owner, leaving the bridge posts free to be adjusted?

Which is a very good possibility. Just be careful if you start to feel any resistance. It will also be a little easier if you take off the two outer sPrings, to leave less pressure on the bridge as you adjust, but it is not necessary.

Re: Allen wrench size for Bridge posts for RG520qs?

Gotcha- good idea on the string removal.

I wonder if the guitar is simply missing these studs. Should they be visible when looking down into the bridge posts?

I bought this used (it's a '95 I think) from a local shop and had no idea what to look for- my first non-hardtail guitar. I think the owner didn't even know much about it other than it had been upgraded to some kind of Dimarzio pickups. This is why I'm asking so many questions about setup, trying to learn my way around this whole double-locking beast. I'm finding I have this sick fascination with it that overrides any sense that it's a huge pain to deal with!

Thanks.

Re: Allen wrench size for Bridge posts for RG520qs?

I doubt you can see the set screws by looking down in there. You should be able to feel it with a 1.5 mm allen wrench. The first two numbers in the serial number is the year the guitar was built, don't think they made a 520QS in 95 but not sure about that. Double locking trems aren't all that bad once you get an understanding of how the spring/string tensions interact with each other. here is the BEST info on the internet:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!! I ACCIDENT|LY SAID STRINGS!! I MEANT TO SAY SPRINGS

Also, You can't see the locking screws, at least I can't. It requires a very small and long 1.5mm allen wrench. It took me almost 2 weeks to locate the locking screws (GC setup). You should start turning it clock-wise, to try to tighten it, if it seems stiff, try turning it the other way, then you should be able to feel it! There is a small chance they could have been taken out, but i kind of doubt it. Seeing as how you can still move your studs freely, I would try to tighten them clock-wise.

good luck!
