Barless nut vs previous top mount

Hi All

I have a project on the go, for which I am using an RG2550 neck.

Now I'm going for proper black (rather than cosmo) hardware for this project.

I have a black low pro edge already. black tuners, knobs, screws etc should be easy enough to find, but the nut on the neck already is a top mount powder cosmo with the retaining bar.

Now, from what I can tell, they don't make a 43mm top lok nut in proper black.

this leaves me with 4 choices that I can see.

1 - Try the gotoh GHL-2 nut. this is available in black. reports suggest the rear mount gotoh is a direct replacement, so would the top mount version also be?

2 - The barless Ibanez nuts are available in black, part number 2LN3YAA001 - can these be retrofitted to guitars with the older style top mount nut?

3 - Have the nut powder coated black. I did this with the nut on my JS100 because annoyingly, they are only available in chrome. it did seem to work ok.

4 - just keep it powder cosmo and put up with it being a different colour.

Thoughts guys? anyone know for fact if either options 1 or 2 is a perfect replacement?

Thanks

The GLH-2 will work, but the radius is a little different. It's 400mm (16") as opposed to you fretboard which is 430mm (17")

AFAIK- the 2LN3YAA001 IS the Gotoh GLH-2. Ibanez only uses Gotoh parts on MIJ.

Re: Barless nut vs previous top mount

Thanks for the info

Rich Lists the 2LN3YAA001 as 400mm I think, so that makes sense.

After I wrote the above, I did wonder wether the 2LN3YAA001 was used more for the premium/standard models, rather than the MIJ models, as I haven't seen a MIJ recently with black hardware. EZII tend to be black where as EZ or Edge/Lo pro tend to be cosmo.

am I likely to have an issue with 400mm nut on a 430mm neck?

Thanks

Re: Barless nut vs previous top mount

On second thoughts, are you sure 2LN3YAA001 is the same as Gotoh GLH-2?

The 2LN3YAA001 is barless, and the GLH-2 comes with a bar in the kit. or have I mis-understood?

Thanks

My EZII is cosmo. With a 400mm nut/ (*and* bridge) and a 430mm neck, you will have slightly reduced (relative) action on the outer strings. But in practical terms, there's hardly gonna be any trouble.

The bar is needed for strats or whenever the headstock angle is not adequate to provide enough force to hold the strings down to their slots. There is no such thing as "barless" nut (by design) in the floyd/gotoh/ibanez world. Either your guitar needs a retainer bar or not, this is not depended on the nut itself. I have heard the term for Kahlers tho, but don't know anything more specific.

Re: Barless nut vs previous top mount

Thanks Panix.

Well Ibanez used to use a bar, but now they don't, so I guess something must have changed. either the angle of the headstock, or the nut itself... I don't have one of each in order to compare...

Re: Barless nut vs previous top mount

The nut on my barless uv70p is nothing special. If you tune your guitar to pitch, unscrew and remove pads/bolts from the nut and watch the strings inside their slots. Are they touching all the bottom of their slot all the way? Then no bar is needed. Are they lifting a little bit on the headstock side? Then a bar is needed.

The nut is what changed. It's not longer curved face but completely flat.

Re: Barless nut vs previous top mount

I've always wondered what the point to the curved nut was.
I liked the flat nut on the EZII on the 350 I played with. It made changing strings a bit easier.

Rich, do you know if the barless nuts are compatible with older top mount necks? Specifically from a 2005 ish rg2550?

Thanks guys

No, they're a lot taller, usually
