Best cloth to wipe strings after playing?

What is the best cloth to wipe strings of the guitar after playing ? Is any regular cloth around the house that is clean going to do the trick? Or do I need to get one from a music store specifically?

How often do you guys wash yours ?

Old T-shirt cut into rags works, as does a microfiber cloth or flannel. Just wipe it down when you put it away, I keep one in every case and a bandanna in my back pocket at gigs.

Lol, I'm sorry......

I have OCD actually.... that's why I always worry about the most miniscule and stupid things....

Sadly, the sad thing is I honestly lose sleep thinking about what to use to wipe the strings, wondering if I used the correct material, and if I don't use a specific cloth for guitars, I feel like I did it wrong.... I really can't sleep after....

Yeah so sorry...

Re: Best cloth to wipe strings after playing?

Any cotton cloth like old t-shirt will do. I like to soak it in isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) first and then wrap it around the string and slide it up and down the neck. Pinch the string through the rag. Doing this really gets it squeaky clean and all the ****, gunk, skin and crap is cleaned off the string. My strings last forever by doing this.

Give it a try - you'll be surprised how well this works.

spray some wd-40 to some old cloth, or microfiber. place something (thick paper, plastic sheet?) between the strings and the fretboard, just to protect it from wd-40. wipe the strings. works great for me.

Whatever you use, always clean underneath the strings.

WD-40 leaves a film that attracts dirt, and impregnates the wood of the fingerboard. It can cause issues as trivial as staining or as serious as lifting frets. The goal is to remove gunk from the guitar, not add a product that attracts it.

I agree totally, that's why I wrote "place something (thick paper, plastic sheet?) between the strings and the fretboard, just to protect it from wd-40" so the cloth only touches the strings, not the frets or the board.

Correct because WD-40 is a hydrocarbon based lubricant - the propellant evaporates while the 'oil' is left behind. The whole idea is to remove any oil from strings as it will attract dirt that will pack into the string windings.

Using a sovent like isopropyl alcohol (which is dirt cheap), napthalene, etc. is preferable as it does not leave a residue.
