Question Black Hardware Cleaning (Rust)

Hey, guys!

Recently I bought cheap Washburn MG-40 (Mercury) for restoring purposes. The wood parts are in perfect condition (the body was refinished), but the hardware parts are covered with soft rust. What products/methods should I use to clean them without remove the black painting?

Re: Black Hardware Cleaning (Rust)

Hi lospider,

if it was me I'd have that trem taken to bits and given a good scrub with WD40 and an old toothbrush. Then wipe each part down with a cotton rag and rebuild. Make sure it's well wiped down though because if you get any WD40 in or on the wood of the guitar it will stain it.

Have fun!

Re: Black Hardware Cleaning (Rust)

Thanks, GoodVaibes! I'll try that!
Some folks suggested Naphtha, but I think it's too abrasive. So, I'll experiment with the WD-40 first...
