Body Building

Howdy all.

I am in the process of hunting down an I banez 5 piece Prestige neck. 7 string preferably and I havent just yet decided if I want Mapple or Rosewood.

I will be building a body for it in the general shape of a Rhandy Rhodes with afew tweeks here and there.

I want to make the body out of Bass Wood for the shredder abbilities it offers.

My question is... Should i make it all out of Bass Wood or is it good to mix in something as a tone block. I dont realy fancy Mahogany, so would something else work in its place. Or should i just stick with Bass Wood as a solid piece.

The fins are going to be alot thinner than the standard V fins, But it wont be as thin as say Hermin Lee's guitar.

I was also considering capping it with a thin Mapple top, have herd that realy helps pop out the notes. Dont worry to much about the grain of the wood as I am going to do a swirl paint job on it.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Body Building

Ultimately, only you know what woods you prefer. But do keep in mind: basswood is relatively soft, and it is fairly common to ding up the points on a V. The maple top should help in that regards.

As far as a tone block, again, that is up to you. Were it me, I'd go with mahogany of korina, but it's all personal taste.

Re: Body Building

No reason not to go with just basswood if that is the tone/weight you like.

A maple cap will add some weight and also some bite and top end. Plenty of builders use that combo with good results. If it's good enough for Suhr and Tom Anderson.......
