both pots are stuck

so something very strange happened to me just now.
after sleeping in the case for a while, I pull out my USAC Necromancer.
everything is fine until I found out that both pots : volume and tone are stuck!!
I don't remember this kind of problem before on this guitar.

So now both pots are set on maximum, and can't roll it down.
I put pressure when rolling it down, but it doesn't move.
I'm not sure if I can even remove the knobs, it's like someone super glued it to the shaft.

I'm not sure if there is any kind of modification that can make your pots set to max and stay to the max no matter what? you can't roll it down anymore?
any such modification exist?

Re: both pots are stuck

That sucks. ..
I've had to do surgery on a few guitars that had glued on knobs..
My first thought would be a corrosion issue, but you would need a lot of humidity for that to occur. .and it wouldn't be just the pots that would show corrosion if that was the issue...
I wouldn't call sticking the pots wide open a mod, personally, kind of defeats the purpose of a pot, unless you were controlling volume with a pedal and wanted the tone wide open, but stranger things have happened! !
If you can't get those knobs off you'll have to break the pot down from inside the control cavity, not fun , but it's fairly easy.

Spray well with contact cleaner. They should move once you get some contact cleaner down in the shafts. May take a little pressure to get them to turn. Worked on an old Hohner Les Paul copy a while back with stuck pots and they loosened up and still work fine today. Just sat too long cased and in a humid environment.

Good call metalhead...
It's been very humid here in Kansas City, I've had to get an extra dehumidifier to maintain a proper RH level since all my stuff is down in the dungeon.
But it still sucks to have knobs that won't come off. I got a set of automotive interior trim removal tools along with a 4x4" square of leather with a slit cut in it so you can get it over the knob. Gutting the pot would be a last resort..Should of mentioned that previously. .

Re: both pots are stuck

humidity : that's the suspect.

besides the pots that don't move, the strings also shown some sign of corrosion, not that bad, but it looks like the strings are worn out or something. I always put a new set of strings before I rest the guitar in the hardcase, So I expect the strings are still fresh.

I also put some silica gel in the hardcase to absorb moist.

funny that other guitars don't have this problem, even I put them in the hardcase for a long period.

I will try the contact cleaner trick later on.

will keep you posted!

Re: both pots are stuck

so I try to spray it with contact cleaner.
the tone pot is safe, now i can roll it down.
but the vol pot is still stuck.
well, look at the bright side, I never roll back any volume, it's always set on max., so it's nice to have a volume that won't roll back LOL,
