Question Building a custom Jem style guitar.

Hey everyone

I'm currently out of work due to injury and have decided to build my own Jem style guitar as a project to keep me busy. It's taking me a few years to get this project moving. I joined this site awhile back to get the information i needed to build this guitar the right way, a guy at a local music store turned me on to it. I've built a few custom strat style guitars that I love more than my strat American standard. It's not going to be wild and crazy like some of the awesome guitars members have built and posted on here it's going to be more old school and kind of styled after the the Jem7v but all hardware will be Cosmo instead of gold and the pickgaurd will be stainless steel. I've got the body and neck sprayed and the pick gaurd wired with a new set of Evo's done to Jem/Ibanez specs but I'm having a hard time deciding on which trem to install in it. I've only played Fender type trems in the past so I'm looking for advice from all of you. After reading through all the threads I'm getting the feeling that the Edge III's are bad. Seems like they're not stable and don't stay in tune. I'm leaning towards the edge pro but would like suggestions from the members.

Thanks in advance.
Scott

get an edge or lo-pro edge. they may cost more than others, but you'll thank yourself in the future for spending the money!

Re: Building a custom Jem style guitar.

Thanks guys I'm a believer in quality so I don't mind spending extra money if it's the right thing to do. I could have bought a used real Jem for the price this project will possibly end up costing but it's more fun and a lot more personal satisfaction this way than clicking the buy now button! Again thanks for the help.

I saw a few others on eBay let me know if any of these are worth looking into? Edge zero, low trs II, low trs from a JS100. Ricky I take it when you say edge you mean the original edge?

Re: Building a custom Jem style guitar.

yeah, the edge is the original, and the lo-pro is just the lo-profile version of the edge, so mechinally the same, just cosmetically different.

the edge pro is pretty good. the edge zero 2 is better than the edge zero. avoid the lo-trs and the edge 2 and 3.

the ZPS (zero point system) is from the current S series, and again, is supposed to be pretty good, but never seen it on anything but an S.

yea defo dont get a lo-trs they fall apart mine did from my rg7420 so im filling in the caverty and puting a fixed bridge on it. i made a custom jem in the style of the bad horsie mirror top and fit a edge pro on it, no complaints with that so far

Re: Building a custom Jem style guitar.

When measuring the trem posts do you measure between the posts from edge to edge or from the center of the post to the center of the other post? I use to know this but can't remember.

Re: Building a custom Jem style guitar.

Not that it matters anymore as Scott hasn't been on this thread in several months, but he can only use whatever trem the body was routed for.

Without knowing that, there's no way to make any suggestions.
