Can anyone recommend some nut files?

So here is the issue I'm trying to address. On my gibson sg's, I find the strings, particularly D and G strings, tend to catch in the nut.

I typically play the SG's in 3 possible configurations:

Standard tuning, with DR Tite Fit MT10, 10-46 gauge strings. 10 - 13 - 17 - 26 - 36 - 46

E flat tuning, with DR Tite Fit BT10, 10-52 gauge strings. 10 - 13 - 17 - 30 - 44 - 52 (this is my most common setup)

E flat tuning with Ernie Ball Power Slinky, 11-48 gauge strings. 11 - 14 - 18 - 28 - 38 - 48

I feel like I have problems on all 3 of my SGs with the D & G strings sticking/catching at the nut, regardless of what strings I use.

Should I look for a complete set of nut files, or should I just key in on the gauges I need?

Note: I also play Fender American strats, x4. I don't really have those issues on the Fenders, but it might not hurt to have the files on hand either.

So anyway, where should I look for files (ie good brand, etc), should I try to get a full set, and if I do file the nuts on my gibsons, should I file for the largest string I typically use in that slot, or would that cause issues should I a lighter gauge string?

Thanks in advance.

You want the slot open enough that the largest string you use in it won't bind. A Stew Mac combination set is what I used to use before I had to break down and buy a bass and extended set. Good files aren't cheap though.

Lube is always the most essential tool.

Thanks Rich. The recommendations I've had for various nut lubes are all over the place, is there something particular that you use?

Interesting. I do use Chapstick on the string trees on my Fenders, but never considered it for the nut issues.
