can't lower action any further

I have a 2002 RG1570 (edge pro bridge). I can adjust my action up and down to a certain point. But when it gets low enough, the pivot stud (closest to the thinnest strings) goes down without the bridge. The knife edge is rounded on this side, and the same pivot stud is kinda stripped in the middle, where the knife edge fits. Is the knife edge shape normal? The other pivot stud looks fine and that knife edge is linear. I switched both studs to see if that helped me lower the action further, but it didn't. Should I buy new pivot studs, or does the bridge need replaced? I can take pics if necessary.

While switching studs, I removed the bridge to see if there was anything underneath blocking it from going down -- but there wasn't. After putting it back together, with my action at its lowest (~2.5mm at the 24th fret at both E strings), it doesn't hold tune very well -- even with the tuning locks locked. Is it normal for tune to re-stabilize after putting a bridge back in? I've never had tune problems in the past.

Re: can't lower action any further

I've seen this problem on two of my Ibanez guitars.
The bridge itself is touching the body. If you try to pull up on the trem when you have the stud in this far, it may not even pull up or very little. Is this happening? If it is I can tell you how to fix the problem.

Re: can't lower action any further

Trems/floyds are crazy bitches. They just need some time, and multiple tunings.
Adjusting the height, the tension, changing the string gauge, adjusting the neck, etc. will all change the tuning. Be patient.

Can you post some pics on this? May be able to help or at least advise.

Re: can't lower action any further

if you are having to lower the trem so far down that the pivots can't move because they dont have any clearance you may need a truss rod adjustment.

You should never had to lower the trem that far down to get the action right. I suggest you have a full setup done.

Re: can't lower action any further

Did you buy this new or used? If used maybe somebody put a stud mod in it and it has locking studs.
Is the Allen to adjust a 3 or 4mm?
If it's a 4mm it's a locking stud.
If it's a 3mm it's not. It would be abnormal for an Edge Pro to not allow the action low enough as long as the setup is correct.
Is the trem perfectly flat?
Is the neck near straight with just a hair of relief?

Re: can't lower action any further

I would take it into a tech. Have another set of eyes on it.
I have seen a lot of people do some interesting things to guitars in efforts to make it perform better, but maybe the problem doesn't lie with the bridge, but with the neck like someone else suggested.
