Crack in neck?

Hi- I have an oppurtunity to buy a Jem -all black, white pups, pyramids. There is a 1 1/2" verticle hairline crack on the neck-it runs between the 2 locking nut bolts. Is this common?-Does it need to be repaired? I'm getting a reduced price, but if it is trouble,I don't want it.Thanks

Re: Crack in neck?

It is pretty common.

What it does to the value of the guitar, I don't know.

Re: Crack in neck?

I dropped my guitar a few months ago and the neck cracked exactly like on the pics. I did the repair like on IbanezRules and I can't almost see the crack anymore!

Re: Crack in neck?

Thanks-The crack is nowhere as bad as yours Krizz-its just a line that runs down the neck-The guitar is still playable.

Yeah, I did panic when a guitar I had got a neck crack like that. Turned out alright though. You can still see the crack where it was glued, but you can't feel it.

Thanks.

I happened to see the repair tutorial before so I did not panic, I was a little anxious in the beginning to do such a repair but it worked out very nice.

The only problem was that the back of the neck seemed to have been lacqued (is that the right word??) and to finish the crack I had to sand it a bit to make it more or less invisible. I was afraid that I had to sand the whole neck because only thing I had was blanc furniture oil; so I tried it on a small spot first and it worked out great! You can only _feel_ the difference between the lacqued area and the oiled spot. My first 'luthier' experience

Re: Crack in neck?

Same happened to mine, I couldn't bring myself to fix it though as I'm too heavy handed. Had a luthier do it and you can still see where the crack was (was so bad it had to be pinned too). But it finished up just as smooth and playing wise is no different.
