dead strings - (even brand new ones!)

i used a set of ernie ball hybrid slinky the other day but after putting the fresh set on, the 26 gauge string (4th string) was totally dead!..it didn't ring at all..just a dull thud..
is it common for some packs of new string to have an 'ugly duckling' in em?

dead strings

Actually it's weird... at least it has never happened to me. Check if it's something with your saddles or floyd, but if you change strings and they sound okay, then it's a faulty string you got. Bad luck to my opinion, not common... btw, I use D'Addarios 10-46
