Question Designing logo in abalone

Ok, so I've googled my way through hell, and read a lot about it.. But every example out there is made cheap and easy, with no details what so ever.

I am designing my own custom inlays, and I don't know how far I can push this reguarding details in the logo and so forth. Plan was to have it in multicolor abalone, to enhance the details present in the design. But I don't know how they make this stuff :S

In some logos, it looks like the whole image has been put together by all this small pieces, to make the bigger picture...
In others, it looks like the whole thing in one piece of abalone.. Like someone drew a picture using an "abalone pencil".

I have two inlays to draw..

One is just easy letters in the fretboard over the 12th fret.

But the other one, suppose to be a warrior with wings, input right underneath the bridge.. No matter how I draw this, it's pretty clocked with details.. You know.. Hair, eyes, fingers, and so forth. and I wonder if the design is possible to turn into an abalone inlay?

Re: Designing logo in abalone

As far as I understand it, for the more complex picture you are going to have to make a "mosaic" of different abalone pieces. It is totally possible, you just need to get some large blanks and mark our the individual "tiles".

For the simple letters you could probably cut them from individual blanks using a scribe and a pearl cutting saw.

What ever you do, always, always, always wear a dust mask and eye protection with that stuff.

Thanks man..

I'm not making it, just drawing it

Point was.. I wont use hours to measure and draw it, if it all ends up with the luthier saying it can't be done

Re: Designing logo in abalone

anything can be done with enough money!

you may have to outsource it to a different country if you cant get it done in norway, which will obviously bump the cost up a bit.

from what i can gather, the key thing for this sort of idea is to do the drawing 100% accurate on a piece of paper/card, and email (or post multiple copies) it to different places and get the quotes. some places may turn around and just say no straight away, whereas others may say yes, but it'll cost you $500 + the shipping!

if you look on youtube on the prsguitars channel, they have a video about the inlays, and mention a company they use in the US called (i think) Pearlworks (or a variation on that spelling), which is who they outsource pretty much every single custom inlay of theirs to! and i think the same people rout the fretboards too!!

any luthier worth his money should EITHER be able to do it himself, or be able to point you to someone who will be able to help!
