direct mounting a PU...

what should I do to direct mount a the pick-ups in my RG?
Have I to drill holes in the wood or is it a much more simple job?
thanks for your help

if you pickups didn't come direct mounted, then the prospect of direct mounting is difficult, at least in RG's, since they drilled out cavities for the pickup adjustment screws to fit in, as you can see in this picture...

notice the holes for the humbuckers have cutouts for both adjustment screws, and the single is flat, it doesn't have holes for adjustment screws, since on an RG570 it was direct mounted... in order to do this properly on a RG like this, u'd have to get pieces of wood, cut them to the shape of the holes, and glue them in place, thus making a flat surface, so that you don't penetrate thru the back of the guitar... it is possible for you to do it without making the plugs, the chances of going thru the back of the guitar with the screw u use are great... i did this on my neck thru RG, and now i have 2 holes in the backside of the neck pickup...

oh, nooooo!

I was suspecting something like that, and I think I'll abort any direct mounting dream

however, in your opinion, does direct mounting really improve sustain?

Hi, It's relatively easy to use a scrap piece of wood and glue 4 "plugs" into the height adjustment routes, Just take your time and all will go smoothly, I really have'nt noticed a great deal of differance between Direct mount and Scratchplate mounted pickups ... Just my 2 pence

i didn't really notice much more sustain, what i noticed was a fatter tone all around... the lows were nicer, the highs were nicer, everything was nicer, it was all happy... very much worth it imo... plus it looks cooler
