DIY satin finish

Hi folks.

I've been thinking about doing a refin on my RG7321 (from black to white), but waiting for the summer to come, 'hey, let's make the shiny black finish a lot more 'dull''.... I've just received a black 1-ply pickguard that I think would look really cool on a satin finished guitar. The satin finish would also make a good starting point for my refin project (I don't care to remove the paint completely).

So, what I'm basically asking for is some tips & tricks on how to get a nice satin finish on a guitar that originally has a shiny finish to it.
I have some 1500 grit steel wool, but I don't think that would to the trick as it might not be fine-gritted enough...

Re: DIY satin finish

Are you talking about Satin natural finish or satin painted finish?

As I wrote, I'm not going to remove the factory paint, just make it satin...

Re: DIY satin finish

Are you trying to avoid respraying it? Just dulling it mechanically won't really look that good. I use white scotchbrite pads on some of my pick guard materials to give them a duller swirled look. You definitely see the abrasions though. A guitar finish will be no different.

Re: DIY satin finish

all of these are great suggestions, I usually don't polish out my finishes, just 0000 steelwool and it holds up a little better to fingerprints/tiny scratches etc. The small scuffs make the surface a little more slippery too.
