Easy Fret Bender for Dunlop Pre-Cut Fretwire

Hi Folks
Found a quick and dirty fretbender for Dunlop pre-cut frets. Ran to home depot and found a 4" male pipefitters cap that worked really well. The fret fit in the thread nicely and it only cost $5.

Re: Easy Fret Bender for Dunlop Pre-Cut Fretwire

the reason why you bend the frets is to match the radius of the fretboard.

you could use a jig saw and cut out a circle that has a the radius and your fret board and then clamp the fret wire to the circle.

you could also just pony up the money for a stew mac fret press

either way using something with a smaller radius than you neck is going to mess up neck radius when you put the frets on the fret board.

This is good thinking, but J. is right that 4" diameter is way too small (2" radius). You DO want to pre-bend to a smaller radius than your fretboard, but 2" to 17" is way too extreme. you would want something at least 12" in radius (24" across).

I still like the way your thinking Dino, maybe you can find something else a little closer?

Cool idea, but my worry, in addition to the radius issue, is introducing a little twist in the fretwire since you're winding it around a threaded object vs. something with a singular channel.

Thanks for your input guys. The frets actually came out pretty well. After bending on the 4" pipe they came out to about a 7" radius. Twisting wasn't an issue - they fit in that thread perfectly and lie perfectly straight on their side. A larger pipe would be better - maybe a 6" would give me a 10" radius.
Up to this point I've always overbent my frets a little (with a friend's stewmac fretbender) & hammered them in with a hammer. If I was to bend a long piece of wire I'd definitely use your method J.Arlege.
