Edge zero vs Edge zero 2?

Hi,

I am considering purchasing an RG3XXLB, it comes equipped with the edge zero 2.

I have 2 iby's, both with edge pro's, and it seriously took me 4 years (and the locking stud mod) and a lot of frustration to learn how to set it up, but once you understand it, it is an absolute rock solid trem, stays in tune now better than some of my hardtails. I absolutely love it.

Anyway I just want to get a new cheapie that i can keep in a different tuning (it would be a bonus to be able to change tunings on easily as well), and although im reluctant to go anything other than a second hand edge or edge pro guitar, I have been reading lots of good stuff about the Edge Zero. I googled my topic and couldnt find any comparisons. Is the Edge Zero 2 just an updated version of the Edge zero? Is it any good? I would want a similar as possible feel to the edge pro (but dont care about fluttering)

Also, since i quite like the looks of the RG3XXlB, if the trem is crap is it possible to easily retrofit and edge pro in? Also, these arent premium guitars are they?

Cheers for your advice.

Re: Edge zero vs Edge zero 2?

I can only relate my experiences with the EZII.

I have the RG3xxv in candy apple. While there were some of the "problems" that are associated with most of the Indonesian guitars The EZII is a rock solid performer. I am exceptionally happy with it. I did have a tuning issue with the guitar that turned out to be coming from the nut. A piece of double sided tape fixed that.

I bought the guitar from Rich who spent a crazy amount of time (considering the guitars price) putting the best parts he had in inventory together for me. He took the best neck he had and filed all of the fret ends flush to the board and dressed all of the ends that needed it. He then mated it to the best CA body he had and turned it into an exceptional player.

I have no experience with the EZ, but I can honestly say that the EZII performs just as well as all of my Edge, Lo-Pro's, and Edge-Pro equipped guitars. It's so stable and reliable that I chose to use it for my latest build strictly because of it's cost to performance ratio. No other Ibanez trem has been this stable or reliable at the EZII's price point.

You'll probably have "issues" that you'll want to address with the 3xxv- the EZII will not be one of them

Re: Edge zero vs Edge zero 2?

Thanks for your advice there, much appreciated. Ill certainly be checking some ez2 guitars at my local music store, although like with the edge pro, i dont think you can really assess a trem by playing some beaten up poorly setup guitar in a music store for 15 mins.

What other problems do you tend to have with the indo ones? I have only had Japanese RG's, however my friend just bought the premium indo vai seven string (the green and black one), and I was seriously blown away by the build quality, the factory fret work was better than the 2 brand new Japanese RG's that ive bought. The bridge didnt feel quite as solid as the edge though, but still fine.

What issues do you see me having with the 3xxv? Looks pretty standard to me, I mean i expect to have to spend half a day setting it all up, but do they have any other significant inherent problems? The only experience I had with one was an RG321 i think (the base model indo hardtail RG), it was a long time ago, it definitely didnt have that quality feel of the Prestiges, but it was a decent axe.

Cheers.

Re: Edge zero vs Edge zero 2?

I can attest that the EZ2 is a solid performer. I use it with D'Addario 10-52. No tuning issues. None.

The only problem which would now lead to its replacement, however, is inflicted by myself. Do NOT overtighten anything. I overtightened three saddle screws (the ones that transfix them to the baseplate). One was stripped (as usual), but the enigma lies with the other two: they stripped and enlarged the hole in the baseplate, forcing me to remove the saddles a hole back and live with intonation issues.

IIRC Rich said a long time ago that the 2xxv and 3xxv anniversaries had TONS of issues from bad fret work to more serious neck issues.

I have an Indo RG350EXZ and it plays just fine. Needs a neck shim for lower action but no issues with the binding falling off or fret work. Although, based on the things I've read, the anniversaries make my 350 look like a diamond

Re: Edge zero vs Edge zero 2?

The only thing about the EZII you might not find as nice is the absence of the easier intonation process involving the screw. Other than that, you would find the hardened knife edges and locking posts super-duper, especially for someone like me who had been using an Edge III for a long time before getting a guitar with a better trem.

Re: Edge zero vs Edge zero 2?

Are they interchangeable? Meaning can you replace and Edge Zero II with an Edge Zero. Disregarding any reason why someone would do this, are they identical in dimensions etc.

Re: Edge zero vs Edge zero 2?

Apart from crappy peripherals (e.g. saddle screws), there is nothing wrong with edge zero ii. I think it feels nice. Much nicer than OFR. OFR is solid as a tank but so rough. Edge zero ii is more refined and sweet to the player.
