English Lessons # 15: about frets

sorry if i talk about guitar stuff in a non-guitar stuff section, but:

i often read words like dressing, leveling, crowning when speaking about frets. what do they all mean? any differences?

Levelling is just that... it gets the tops of all the frets to the same even level. This is done by gently tapping frets down to re-seat them and/or carefully filing them down.

Crowning is putting the nice rounded top back on the fret after you've ground them level. It involves some filing but mostly careful and gentle sanding with successively higher grits of sandpaper and ultimately polishing with steel wool.

Dressing is more the finishing off of the crowning, rounding off the fret ends and doing the small finnicky detail work that makes a good fret job great.
