Evo's setup on a 7vwh...

Are the Evolution pickups on a 7VWH supposed to move, they are not tightly fixed on my jem! its not like they shake with the guitar, but if push them with my finger, they really move left and right. unlike on my other guitar, where the pickups are firmly fixed to the body.

Yep, that's right.
They are suspended with the screw and a spring from the pickguard. Don't worry about it, they won't fall out..

Don't worry, i've faced the same "problem" but this is not a problem at all. It's the way Ibanez manufactures the JEM's

Not only with JEMs.
I guess it's common on all pickguard guitars.
My Universe UV7BK does the same.

Re: Evo's setup on a 7vwh...

I put a little packing foam (like you get in auminium cases) between the side of the bridge evo and the pickguard cutout. It stops the wobbles and the unwanted squeal I was getting.

And makes feedback a more controllable issue!

Re: Evo's setup on a 7vwh...

Sorry took a while to reply.
Here's a pic of my bridge Evo

I've stretched the contrast of the picture so you can see better but I used the dark grey foam you get in aluminium cases (that you're supposed to cut out to fit your tools/camera etc.) It's a lot less visible than that from any distance.
What I found was on the high gain channel of my amp, when I stopped playing there was a squeal from the bridge pickup. I reallised it wasn't the actual pickup windings (which can cause problems) as If i held the edge of the pickup the squeal stopped. In fact if I held the scratchplate near the pickup the squeal stopped.
I know some people replace the tension springs with stiff rubber cut to length to stop unwanted vibration but I didn't want take the guitar to bits, so I stuffed a bit of foam between the side of the coils and the mounting hole... Perfect. You can still adjust the height if you're careful and any feedback I get is now via the strings, and the bobbins are correctly angled with respect to the strings.

You know, I didn't know that, otherwise I'd have looked at that picture and done a better job!

oh well, pickup foaming usually doesn't get that neat-looking, but even rawer than yours, especially when the pickups rings aren't as wide as the JS's. Mr.Manning himself doesn't do it as neat as in the above pic. anyway, the bottom line is to stop squealings, so you did a perfect job

I haven't put it on my guitars yet. I'm just stating what Paul Gilbert himself states about this! (And that he learnt this little trick from Satch in the G3 tour.)

Well... I guess the men must be right!

Re: Evo's setup on a 7vwh...

Yeah, they're the Optima strings (like Brian May uses) which I originally bought just to try out (you know you can never have enough gold on a VWH!) and Actually I like them so I've stuck with them...
