extra (?) ground wire - is it needed?

howdy...

i just installed a tone zone and a PAF pro in my RG570 (yay ) anyways, i tore out the SC, as i never use it anyway, and i find what appears to be a ground wire (?) at the bottom of the SC cavity. it's attached to a small screw directly in the wood of the guitar, and it goes to the regular ground connection on the back of the volume pot, along with the other ground wire (the one that goes to the trem claw) i've never seen or heard of this wire before, and it looks a bit odd... i'm wondering whether it is ok to remove this wire and the screw altogether? * * *

I'd leave it there. It helps reduce buzz in your guitar by providing a common ground for the electronics. It's probably a good idea for you to attach the ground wire from your pickup to this ground point as well. This will ensure the pickup knows where ground is etc...

well, if the other ground is there (the one that goes to the trem claw) then would'nt i have to remove the one that goes to the SC cavity to make the trem claw one the "common" ground? keep in mind, these are two completely different wires, wired to the same spot, but going to the different locations.

You don't want ground loops. *I would connect the ground wire from your pickup to the ground on the back of the volume pot. *I would also leave the screw and wire as is. *If your RG570 is like mine, it has black conductive paint sprayed on all the electronics cavities. *The screw into the wood is guaranteeing that the conductive paint is grounded to the volume pot.
