Finishing Question - Cutting/Buffing/Polishing

What is everyone using for a final buff & polish after wet sanding? I was looking around my local autozone but there were so many different buffing compounds I didn't know what to grab. Should I start with a courser compound then finish with a fine swirl remover or is there something that will give a nice finish in one shot? Im going to be doing it by hand if that makes any difference.

Re: Finishing Question - Cutting/Buffing/Polishing

hi,
what are you polishing?
cellulose,2 pack,polyester?
cellulose is easy by hand,2 pack difficult and polyester near impossible to polish by hand.
i would buy a small machine polisher, medium compound, fine compound and a machine glaze and then finish with a regular car wax/polish.
hope that helps.

Lacquer Clear, out of a can, kind of a mix of Duplicolor (that sucked) and a can of Valspar I had around.

ok,
that will most likely be a 1 pack acrylic.
fairly easy to polish by hand,i would just use t cut(if you have it where you live)and finish with normal car wax/polish.

Thanks guys! Not sure about the T-Cut, I dont think I can get that locally but I'v seen the Meguiar's. So do you just go right to the swirl remover after sanding? I plan to do 1000/1500/2000 on the sanding.

I wipe the guitar down with a damp cloth after sanding just to get all the crap off. After buffing a few guitars by hand, I went and picked up an orbital buffer. It was like, 25 bucks or something but I can't believed I ever lived without one. I can buff and wax in a few minutes

Re: Finishing Question - Cutting/Buffing/Polishing

Meguiar's Fine Cut Cleaner with a cutting pad first, then Meguiar's Swirl Remover with a buffing pad on a cordless drill.... Mirror like shine every time with 2k, and I've used it with Krylon Fusion Clear also.

It's usually recommended that you wait at least 30 days to apply wax over a new clearcoat.

Re: Finishing Question - Cutting/Buffing/Polishing

Its been a while, I had some issues with the last clear coating I did (runs & hardening), mainly the fault of the cheap clear I used so Iv since sanded it back down, re did the color coat and and just last night re-cleared with a can of 2K. It looks amazing, I cant believe I didn't just get the 2K from the start. So now 4 months later I'll be trying this finishing again.
