Gotoh GE-1996

Hi all. Looking for opinions on the Gotoh GE-1996. i'm doing a RG550 rebuild & need a trem. As nice as an original edge would be, it would cost me over twice the price of the Gotoh. i'm not fussy about it being rebuilt with entirely original parts, i just want good quality & stability. Additional cavity routing if needed is not a problem.

Cheers,

Rob

Re: Gotoh GE-1996

I think you'd like the 1996T. I have both a 1996T and an Edge ready to be installed on two build projects and they match very closely as far as dimensions go. If anything, the fine tuner area on the Gotoh is a couple of mms shorther than the Edge, so there shouldn't be a need to re-route. Stud anchors are a bit different though, while the diameter for both are the same, 1996T anchors are 30 mm deep and the Edge anchors are 25mm.

The build quality is nothing short of excellent, in case you were wondering. 1996T also comes with a brass block and there are three block length options (41, 36, 33 mms) I'm sure you know.

Gotoh comes with 360mm bridge radius, so you may have to shim the outer saddles.

If you need any other side-by-side comparisons, let me know I'll try to get them measured when I have a free moment.

Re: Gotoh GE-1996

Thanks. Yea, the gotoh nut radius + brass block struck me as perfect. Saves any additional parts cost - another option i'd considered was a Floyd special, but with the added cost of those parts it'd be pointless.

No extra routing is a good thing & shimming the saddles is simple, just making those holes 5mm deeper.... such effort

Still undecided on finish however. my first thought was black, but how i'm leaning towards gold. Guitar body is black, have both gold & black tuners spare, still haven't decided on pickguard.

Re: Gotoh GE-1996

i believe quality and tuning stability wise the Gotoh is leaps and bounds better than the FR Special.

Re: Gotoh GE-1996

^^^ and maybe the OFR. My OFR got very rusty in just 10 years, when the (supposedly inferior MIK) Floyd Rose II lasted for 25 years without any signs of rust.

There would be no benefit in changing out one set of locking studs for another. The Gotoh's inserts are made longer to accomodate non recessed setups. The studs and anchors in your 550 are perfectly useable. Don't bother changing them out.

Re: Gotoh GE-1996

ah, but i have no studs & anchors. I'm starting with just a body & neck, purchased separately, and stripped of all parts. some of the parts i need i have in my box of spares, others i'm slowly collecting.

gotit...

You could probably find a good set of ED/LP anchors and studs cheaply and use them instead of drilling deeper. I would be hesitant to drill the bores any deeper than they are. There's not a lot of space between them and the spring cavity.

Re: Gotoh GE-1996

kool, thanks for the info. Just been thinking pickguard ideas this evening. Got a super distortion spare for the bridge, maybe get a fast track for the neck & no other pickups. Mailing a few companies to find who can do me a good deal on it + matching truss rod cover

Re: Gotoh GE-1996

I have a question about Gotoh FRs:

Is there a Gotoh FR that is a direct drop replacement for an MIK FR 1000 series or MIG OFR?

Re: Gotoh GE-1996

Don't know the FR1000 dimensions, but if you have it in hand, the best would be to go to http://www.g-gotoh.com/international...roduct=ge1996t and compare the dimensions. Gotoh website has jpegs of pretty much all the dimensions of the 1996T. as far as I know, the 1996T is the only double locking trem Gotoh offers, but I may be wrong.

I have a customized RG with Gotoh studs and anchors. Drilling deeper than a standard Edge anchor is OK.

Obviously, there's not enough room to intonate the low E string without re-routing the trem cavity.

I believe so. Just eyeballing the ones I have, the dimensions are very similar.

The reason I ask is that the people on the carvin forums keep saying that the Gotoh is wider and not a direct drop for the MIK/MIG. I need to find out, because people keep griping about the MIK and I would much rather have the Gotoh one in there to replace it.

Re: Gotoh GE-1996

I don't understand what the real issues are with the MIK 1000 series Floyd Rose. I have one, the only thing I'm not happy with is that the fine tuners are a little rougher feeling to adjust than say the Gotoh or Edge, etc.
