Guitar String Bending Problem

basically whenever I bend the High E (1 and a half step) and or B string (whole step) it keeps going under the above string

ex. bending high e , finger goes under the b string

I have to put my hand into an awkward shape so that it doesn't go under the string

I'm using Ernie Ball Light top / Heavy Bottom strings

Action is set so that the bass strings don't buzz anywhere, Treble strings set to the height so that bending the high e on the 17th fret (1 and half step) doesn't choke(no buzz).

any tips on how to stop that ? or is it a guitar setup problem if so how can I fix it?

Re: Guitar String Bending Problem

IT will take a little practice, but you have to learn to use fret the note using the meat of your finger, and not the tip. That way, you use the tip to push the other string away and deaden it without fretting it all at the same time.

Action is a players preference. But I think this is a good place to look.

Re: Guitar String Bending Problem

It would really help to know what guitar you're talking about, and whether or not it has a trem on it. Sounds like you may have a bridge radius issue. Look down the neck from the bridge to the nut. Do the strings curve to the same radius as the neck? Does the B string look higher than the others? That should be the first thing to check.

Re: Guitar String Bending Problem

AlaskaBat is likely correct.

If the Floyd has not been set up correctly the radius is off for the neck. From the factory they have a shim to make it a 10" radius which pretty different from the close to 16" radius on that Ibanez. Removing the shim still only puts you at 12" ... you want to get saddle shims and install them under your saddles. Any decent tech could do it for you, it's not complicated if you want to do it yourself either.

Some info here:

Re: Guitar String Bending Problem

Sounds like a sit-down with an experienced player or an instructor will go miles here.

Sometimes another set of eyes and some experience are all that is needed. Doesn't sound like there is a setup issue.

Re: Guitar String Bending Problem

If the action is too high on the strings, you can slip under too.

I agree with that, however if you've been playing for a while you'll just come to realize and get comfortable with certain things that happen. If he is fretting the notes with the tip of his finger versus the pad of it weird things can happen. I was just suggesting that someone else check out what he's doing. Just another set of experienced eyes can eliminate debate.
