Headstock Decals - Vinyl or Waterslide

I'm about to embark on re-finishing an RG570 in either bright yellow or bright green (still to decide).

Anyway, I'm planning to colour match the headstock so will need a decal which I would like to have a go at doing myself. I have a good quality ink jet printer at home and with the variety of mediums available these days (water slide paper, transparent sticky paper etc) I reckon this could be achievable with good results.

So I'm looking for feedback as to what is the best/easiest to work with. I plan to clear coat over the top of whatever option I choose but conscious that the lacquer may lift/distort the decal.

I've also managed to source Ibanez logos in vector format from brandsoftheworld.com.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Headstock Decals - Vinyl or Waterslide

Unless it's a really high quality waterslide it will be quite visible that it's a water slide even under a finish. You can get stuff that is super fine almost like a skin membrane, which would not really be visible, but that's probably not what you're going to get with DIY ink jet printer stuff.

That said, the early Fenders used the former, very noticable that it's a waterslide. I've not done anything other than waterslide personally, a few years back I experimented with Fender logos on 2 Squier guitars, with both a cheap run of the mill waterslide and the more expensive stuff, the difference between the two is huge. The expensive one while looking better was extremely delicate though and requires quite some skill and care to apply.

For example purposes, this one's a vinyl decal. Because the chrome is textured, it makes the edges look grain-y and rough, but they're actually crisp and smooth. I'm really thrilled with how good it came out:

I'd like to put a decal on, then stain the headstock and remove the decal.
This would leave the raw wood as the logo.
I need to do some samples on some junk wood to see how it comes out.

My approach is the same method Sebastian said, but the reverse. Use vinyl as a mask with the logo negative, that way you can paint whatever color you want. It's cleaner than a decal.

That sounds like the best option yet although I haven't seen any such vinyls online, only ones of the logo itself.

Did you have to make these yourself with specialist equipment, or can you point me in the direction to source online.

The only equipment you need is a vinyl plotter, something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBpRD2gwX8M
and the logo in vector format.
Any print shop or vehicle advertiser can do the job for you if you give them the logo draw.
I can provide you the logo(vector) if you want to.

You can achive similar results with vinyl/adhesive paper and a spray can.
