Question Help with future Swirl Project

Hey all!

So a while back I go my hands on a really cheap RG 7620 that I love very much. But after a recent mishap with foil tape I kinda sort of removed some paint from between the pickups to the pickup selector. Which looks kinda gaudy if you ask me. So for this winter break me and a friend thought of nothing better to do than to Swirl the body. We have been looking at many videos on youtube and the swirling.com website for instructions and details on which paints to use, how much borax per gallon, etc. But what I want to know is what color primer should I use?

I am trying to go for an Orange Multicolor swirl so would I just use a white primer or a black/grey primer? I can't seem to find any orange primer. Does anyone know where I can get orange primer?? Any help is very much appreciated. I will also try and get pics up soon. I go home in a couple weeks so we should be starting the project then. I am also swapping the pickups with Suhr 7 string pickups so I am also really excited about that as well.

Later!!

Re: Help with future Swirl Project

Prime it white, then use a satin orange paint as the basecoat.

The rule of thumb is that if you're using lighter/brighter colors--spray a white primer. If you're shooting darker colors--use darker primer. Of course, you could still use white primer with darker base colors, too.

I use white primer for all my swirls, you want the white to bring out the real color of the paint being swirled.

If you use say orange every other color will have a orange tint as well. Most of these paints go on semi transparent.

Use white for the brightest, and let the swirl paint do its thing.

Awesome, thanks guys!

Also another thing. I saw a part about preparing the guitar before even adding the primer. Since my guitar is used and has a few dings and chips, what do I do about making it seem like the guitar is more brand new? It said something about filling them? I have no idea what that means?

Re: Help with future Swirl Project

get the original finish completely off, and begin from scratch, after you got the body raw wood, then seal the wood, prime it, and begin.

Re: Help with future Swirl Project

You can see the difference a base coat makes in these pictures. All were done using the same florescent orange swirl color.

This was done with a white base coat

This one was done with a florescent orange base coat.

This was done with a black base coat

So then I guess a White Basecoat is the best if I want a really Orange End Result. Thanks for those examples.

Also, are those your Yoyos?? What brand are those??

Nice! I have a few YoyoJams that I bought a few years back when I got really interested in 1A play. Those swirls are spectacular!

Re: Help with future Swirl Project

So did you use Humbrol paints for those Yoyos??

Also, do they make neon paint to use for a swirl that work really well?
