High E string slipping off fretboard

Hi all,

I've got two J customs and both seem to suffer the mild annoyance of the thinnest E string falling off the fretboard without much persuasion. I have a very light touch but even my tapping or legato can push the string off the fretboard now and again.

Has anyone else had this issue with J customs and is there a fix?

Both guitars' necks seem well aligned to me, both Es look equidistant from the fretboard edges, and I doubt both guitars have a wrongly cut nut. This leads me to suspect it is simply the case of the J Custom fret finishing being rounded and not flat to the edge of the fretboard.

Any input appreciated!

Cheers

Craig

I bet you have older JCs. That's happened to me with older super wizard 56mm heels. They're skinny to begin with, and over time the wood shrinks, especially if not cared for in a consistent environment. But man I love those necks compared to the current 58mm necks.

Is it mostly on higher frets that this happens? This happened to my 2001 RG3120. I loosened the neck bolts and pulled up slightly on the neck to give more room for the high E on the higher frets. In my case, it was out of alignment. Harder to tell with offset dots. I bet yours is a little off too. Are they tree of life inlay? It's tough to tell by the eye with those too. First thing I would try is loosen the neck bolts a little and pull up on the neck a bit in playing position.

This happens on my RG2027X. Not a J-Custom, but a damn-fine guitar otherwise. Always perplexed me that such a nice guitar would have this issue.
