How to clear over enamel paint???

Two questions...

I`m just wondering how you guys clear over enamel after doing a swirl? I need to know before I decide what paints to use. So far I`m thinking Testors, but I also have some Tremclad mixed to the colours that I like and it worked well on some test pieces.

If I cant clear over oil base enamel such as these paints, do automotive paints work to swirl? I know I wont have trouble with the clear this way. Or is there another option for clear other than automotive? Three questions i guess...

Thanks!

Chops.

Re: How to clear over enamel paint???

Well, the general rule is to match the type of clearcoat to the type of finish. So if you've used enamel paint, get a clear gloss enamel. Simple, right, or am I missing something?

Peace

Mike

Cool, I found some oil base clear last night, Tremclad, I didn`t even know there was such a thing. It`s in a rattle can tho, I`d rather run it thru a gun....

Thanks Mike!

Re: How to clear over enamel paint???

You can use a 2k poly clear, make sure you lightly dust the first few coats on, leave about 10 - 15 min between coats. once its covered then you can start caking it on.

Would that be from a spray gun and compressor ? Never used the stuff but the results look good .

Too funny! Well thanks for that! 3 cans is about what I figured. Good job man! I`ll be using Humbrol for my swirl, with the Krylon Fusion work for this?

Thanks!

Re: How to clear over enamel paint???

I wouldnt throw any Clear on Enamel if it was less than 12 months old.

Fully cured Enamel can be cleared with ACRYLIC only.

Thanks.

Re: How to clear over enamel paint???

I have thrown Acrylic Lacquer over fully cured Enamel for over 20 years.

Not one single reaction.

Like the idea of the LEA though.

Talking Re: How to clear over enamel paint???

I'm resurrecting this thread because I'm getting ready to pull the trigger and finally attempt a guitar build this summer. I consult the google for research, and where does it point me? Right back here, where I may have just answered my own question regarding enamel paints . . . two years ago.

Turns out if you search for "enamel paint guitar," well, here we are on the first page of results returned by google.

Laughing and shaking my head at the irony.

Re: How to clear over enamel paint???

I tried to do a swirl with Testor paint an it didn't work. After, I went on the internetz and found that Testors are not recommended for swirls.
