How do they get the paint to change color

Who knows how they get the paint to change color when you look at it from different angles. Usually I see blue. You know you get something that is purple when you look right at it and then from an angle it looks blue.

Do they put a touch of blue into the clear coat or something?

It's a flip-flop paint. It depends on who did the finish and what product they used. I got that effect on my RG-550 space Invaders with Duplicolor Mirage green/purple....before I reshot it bubblegum purple. If you're talking about Ibanez finishes, like the purple neon--I think the clear is tinted with the secondary color.

Yeah exactly like the Ibanez purple neon (at least to my recollection as I haven't seen one up close in 20 years)... But I've seen it on cars and other painted items as well.

Bubblegum purple...You got a link to a pic of that anywhere?

Re: How do they get the paint to change color

The purple neon effect is a dual pearlescent tone.
To get changing effect colors you need a base color and then another coat of a different color before giving clear coating.
The problem is what color you need to combine togheter. As I wrote a couple of days ago searching about purple neon, i tried many combination of blue and purple, but I used metallic color for second coat. That was my mistake. In order to get the purple neon or whatever similiar dual pearlescent tone you need to use a base coat and then a pearlescent color, not metallic ones.
Metallic colours have more opacity, pearlescent more translucency so they reflect also the base coat.
For my purple neon I finally found out that you need a pearlescent blue over a red base coat...
I need also to restore an rg770dxvm, someone may knows about violet metallic?

(I ask sorry for my bad english...)

Re: How do they get the paint to change color

My old VM looked like it had very light, dense, tiny silver flakes. You could try a light purple like my bubblegum and then a pearl silver over it.

The logo is reflective--it appears to glow.

It's going to have an extra "something" in it when I ever get around to finishing the circuit. Go read the build thread--I mention that gap where the last 2 frets were...

Re: How do they get the paint to change color

Something is going in that empty space, but I never considered lighting up the Invader's eyes--thanks for the idea! That is now going to happen, and I can run the LEDs off the other circuit.
