How to fix streaked finish?

Ok, so I have a Gibson MIII. I went to clean it and made a huge mistake. The cleaning agent I used started to remove the finish of the guitar body. I'm an idiot for not checking it first.

The cleaning agent essentially streaked the finish of the guitar, and you can see the streaks when the light hits it right.

How can I make the surface smooth again, removing the streaks? I was thinking of possibly using the finest wet sandpaper I can find and using it. I will try posting up a picture later.

Let me know what yall think.

2000 grit, swirl remover, wax.

I might even just try the swirl remover first to see if that works..
good luck!

Re: How to fix streaked finish?

Here's a few pictures. The guitar needs to be refinished because of the spidering of the finish, but I'm still really pissed at myself for doing this.

Re: How to fix streaked finish?

It's just glare. If you look at the guitar face on, you can't tell a difference, but as soon as you see it at an angle, all the streaks show up.

Re: How to fix streaked finish?

WTF? What did you use to clean it? Simple Green? Go get some Meguiars compound and buff that thing ASAP!

I used Goo-Gone. I used it because that is what I use to get road tar off my truck, and it doesn't damage the paint at all. So I figured it wouldn't hurt the guitar...WRONG!

Like I said, I was a complete idiot for not trying it out somewhere unseen, like under the back cover or something.

The 2000 grit wet sandpaper with swirl remover worked miracles. Thanks for the help y'all.
