Hydro dipping

Has anyone else on here had guitars hydrodipped at all?

For those that don't know, it's a way of transferring a print on to an object, but wrapping round curves.
A video about it is easily searchable on YouTube.

Obviously it's very close to the UV-swirl method, but you are able to have 'exactly' what you want on there - pictures and everything else.

The reason I ask is that I had two custom designs made, printed, hydrodipped and then signed by the one and only Mr Satriani.

As soon as I'm over the magic 10 posts I'll show them if people are interested?

Re: Hydro dipping

Awesome! OK, I will spread out some posts to get over the required count.

Hydro dipping has mainly come from cars - being able to change the colour or appearance of parts without replacing them is very attractive to manufactures. A gentleman on PistonHeads(.com), another website I frequent had dipped a few guitars as a proof of concept. An idea was brewing...

Re: Hydro dipping

My favourite JS album is Time Machine. I really wanted to have something to commemorate that, but I also have a comic book collection - favourite Marvel characters are Magneto and Deadpool.

So, would I be able to have a Chromeboy-style guitar with the album image on top?

Re: Hydro dipping

So the basic idea was thus:

But it turned out that you can't hydrodip 'chrome' - another design had to be decided. I also couldn't decide on Magneto or Deadpool.
Mags:

The idea was for him to be flying, with the clocks going all Salvedor Dali around him.

Deadpool:

I liked the idea of him running on the Deadpool logos - a very good analogy of his insanity.

Re: Hydro dipping

About 5 years ago I sent Bill Reim a Youtube video of shotguns being dipped in camo that showed the endless possibilities. He showed a passing interest but nothing came of it.

Re: Hydro dipping

I wasn't able to decide. So after a quick conversation with SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed), a second guitar was purchased (I had an old JS100 in black already, a JS140 in white arrived).

They went up to the Hydrodip place (http://www.liquid-grafix.co.uk/), and the colour change was agreed on for the black one. Viper Green, naturally.

They came out like this...

So, a few weeks later, this happened:

And this. Joe was a real gentleman, interested in the guitars and the process. Signed everything. An amazing concert as well. They say don't meet your heroes? Rubbish. JS is a true legend.

These two are used regularly and (after building work has finished), will hang beside this beauty.

Re: Hydro dipping

Cheers!

SYL,yes, they are cleared after, and the film is so thin there is no 'end' to it.

Very happy with it. Yes, the characters could be a little more 'centred' but that really is picking at straws.
