Really it is the #12 LNG, see the picture

Hello all, I just became the new owner of the #12 LNG Jem and it is a beauty. Bright, unchipped, undented, etc, even has the orginal case and all the paperwork..(man I'm excited). But - the fretboard needs cleaning, I read the instructions in the tech section and don't really like the idea of putting something abrasive on the guitar, unless I hear from others that it works with little risk of screwing up. I also want to to either fix or replace the screws around the pick ups and pick guard, they have lost there color and have some light rustiness to them. Any help or advice would be great.

Here is a fresh picture -->http://webpages.charter.net/cfbl/lng

Nice Sang - congrats MCR

Well....maple is a beast all it's own. I wouldn't use abrasives. First off, depending on the condition / shape of the board, just try to wipe it with a wet cloth...use ELBOW grease. It would take a lot of typing for me to go into any more detail...go to the search. "maple boards..how to clean" There's some great information on that thread. This place is awesome and FULL of info.

As far as the screws..just replace them. Go to the Guitar shop closest to you or contact Rich at the swirly banner - top of page.

Eh..how many times have I said that........how bout some commission Rich....screws are expensive...

PS - welcome...and I'm quite jealous

Re: I now own the #12 LNG and need help

Thanks for the info. I actually started searching around and found some good info. I ended up going to Rich's site (I bought a FP from him a few years back) and found his "grunge" section and it was most helpful. From looking at it tonight, the frets need a good polish, they have some grim, but the board itself isn't two bad, there are about 3 trouble spots that I see may need the steel wool approach. If I do a spot treatment of steel wool will that be obivious? In other words will I need to do it all or nothing? Bors Oil (spelling) was mentioned as the best should I use that on the spot areas or the whole thing?

I'll send Rich an email about the screws, Rich if you read this could I simply say "I'd like replacement screws for the LNG - all on the pick guard, the two to either side of each pick up, and the two to the hnad rest cover - and you know what (and how many )I would need?

Thanks

Forget getting handrest screws, and pickup screws can't be ordered. The problem with screws is there is no SKU number for them, leaving no way to order.

Re: I now own the #12 LNG and need help

So does that mean I'm out of luck with new? (sounds like it) - the hand rest screws are actually not bad, good even. The pick guard screws show the most. Do replacement pickguards come with new screws?

How about removing the rusty ones and cleaning them and repainting the batch. Possible? Has any one tried that? Any paint suggestions. They look like they were basic black.

Re: I now own the #12 LNG and need help

I've never even seen a LNG in person so I don't know this for a fact, but if you look at the above shot of the #17 on the bay isn't the monkey grip supposed to have the indents(for lack of a better word) on the back. I don't know if the LNG is an exception, I just thought I'd point it out in case it might be a scam or something...

If you had checked your email you'd know I have cover screws, which are plated, cosmo, not painted. I'm not sure if the other screws are K or B. I have new guards but screws are never included, and the guards are the post 90' guards with the moved vol knobs, you cannot buy original position guards.

It is, also for sale locally, evidently to a buyer that can't remember what number it is

Unhappy Re: I now own the #12 LNG and need help

I know what you can't use MCR, never EVER USE LEM OIL ON A MAPLE FRETBOARD!!! I'd go to your local music shop and ask them for advice, because then you can even get a demonstration so your never confused, don't kill me but I'm not too hot on Jems to be honest; I'm a freak :P I like JS and other stuff, to be honest I just think STeve Vai is a good guitarist, but he just loves himself :S
I am now the most hated in this forum thing lol I'll probly get banned
Regards
Jonny

Re: I now own the #12 LNG and need help

Personaly I would not even mess with the fretboard. It doesn't look too bad and to me a maple board is supposed to look worn and used. It adds character.
