Ibanez EDGE PRO OFR Whammy Bar Arm Mod- Awesome-

Decided to install an OFR whammy bar on an EDGE pro equipped guitar. Rather simple $15 mod. I always preferred the screw in whammy arms due to their response and ability to control how tight I want the arm to be. No more swapping out nylon washers for the push in bar. Had to do a few minutes of filing in order to get the OFR insert to fit, but now that its in it works like a charm.

I never was a fan of the washers. Wear out too quickly and end up with a floppy whammy

I would LOVE to do this mod! Was this a kit or did you just sort of rig it yourself? If it was a kit could you please share a link where i can find them?

I have an Edge Lo Pro & an Edge III I'd like to this to...

Thanks!

All you need is the tremolo arm/arm socket which comes with it. You can get it here:

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bridges,...t=3&xsr=190284

The part you want is: 1269-B, or 1269 if you want a chrome arm.

As I mentioned in the first post, you'll have to do some filing once you remove the original tremolo arm socket. It doesn't take much though. Just be sure you want to use the screw on arm, because once your file the hole to make it bigger, theres no turing back! But I wouldn't plan on it anyways.. Vastly superior to the edge bar in my opinion.

That's kinda cool... now i need someone to figure out how to do the opposite of this mod. I never liked the screw on arms that much.... Cool mod tho.

Thanks for that! Got 'em ordered! Looking forward to having a little more control over my trem arms in the near future!

Actually, I'm seriously considering making a custom Jem and having it routed for an OFR... so many more upgrade parts available for the OFR's than the Edge's. Gives more tonal options imo. If I make one I'll prob do a variation on the GMC swirl...

Awesome! I think ur gonna dig it. Ur right about the part availability, having recently had to replace some edge trem parts, I found locating them to be a chore. My next guitar will be a custom jem as well. I like the Ofr idea!

I gotta say, I have no prob with the washers... mine last a long time.... But I LOVE a Edge with a threaded collar. That is why the EZ-II (not sure about the first EZ) is probably my favorite trem after the OE and LP.... seriously.... in my experience, which is all the trems except for the original EZ.

Re: Ibanez EDGE PRO OFR Whammy Bar Arm Mod- Awesome-

Hi SirshredsALot..

I've got those OFRs and ready for the mod for my lo edge pro (jem 77 fp trem)
Would you please give me a little more details about filing the hole ?
Would you do it with a drill ? Or with a hand file ?
And the new OFR's mounting coupler is 11mm (metric)
So would you use a 11mm drill end ? after the mod does this coupler fit tight enough ?
Thanks :-)

I did mine by hand with a "rat-tail" type hand file. Unless you have a nice drill press I would not recommend trying to use power tools on your trem.

Re: Ibanez EDGE PRO OFR Whammy Bar Arm Mod- Awesome-

Tried the hand file with my old rusty trem for testing.. Seems it was a fail as it is nearly impossible to open up a proper 11 mm hole with hand and the result was a slightly loose grip of the coupler.. I guess drilling is the only option for me :-(

Re: Ibanez EDGE PRO OFR Whammy Bar Arm Mod- Awesome-

Yeah its def a bitch to do it cleanly... Gotta take your time & be very patient. Well if you're gonna drill it I highly recommend finding someone with a good precision press to use... Or at the very least lock your trem down in a vise when you drill it out (just keep the tone block attached & lock that in the vise - do NOT clamp your actual trem body in a vise!!!). Bottom line is drilling out that hole bigger is a touchy procedure... If the drill or trem moves on you significantly you risk ruining your trem.

Re: Ibanez EDGE PRO OFR Whammy Bar Arm Mod- Awesome-

I suggest a tapered hand reamer, like 3018A4 from mcmaster. Makes the procedure slow, safe, and repeatable. I don't know if it'd work on and OFR, cause the whole base plate is hardened steel, but on an edge that has the hardened inserts, I think it would be fine. I find I always use this tool first to enlarge holes because it's slow and gives a nice finish.

Good luck

edit: this could work from amazon, too (much cheaper):

Re: Ibanez EDGE PRO OFR Whammy Bar Arm Mod- Awesome-

Sounds like the wrong bunch of guys to ask, but does anyone know where I can buy the horrible arms with the double washers that fit the original Edge Pro II systems? I actually really like them and need one for my 1987 RG550...
Thanks.
