Smile Ibanez Prestige Neck 2550 thickness and Trust rod groove

Hi guys!
I want file down my Ibanez Prestige Neck 2550Z 2009 thickness to
17mm at fret 1 & 19mm at fret 12.

Do you know how deep is Trust rod groove ?
Is it possible to file it too much and to expose the Trust rod ?

Thank you!

Dimi

Re: Ibanez Prestige Neck 2550 thickness and Trust rod groove

Hi Dimi, I believe the truss rod is 5mm in width (the binding on my RG2550z neck is also 5mm) so if there is equidistance on either side of the truss then you probably only have 5 - 6 mm to spare...but if you're only taking 1mm off then I would think you'll be ok...I sanded down the back of my Fender Strat neck and probably took close to 1mm off of it and it has been fine since I did that over 10 years ago... not sure if this helps =0
maybe someone with finer luthier skills than mine will chime in here...

Hold on one second. I'm not very experience with truss rods, but I do know that I need a 6mm tool to adjust the truss rod on my RG520QS. IIRC the JEM models need a 7mm tool, but don't quote me on it.

Re: Ibanez Prestige Neck 2550 thickness and Trust rod groove

I have a RG520QS too - nice guitar but back on point - you're probably right...I measured the truss on my strat cuz it doesn't have a truss rod cover so I was assuming consistency in the dimensions of the truss rods but Ibanez may use a thicker truss rod than Fender...but I would think that they're fairly close in size...hmmm...

Why not sell it and get a prestige with a neck with those dimensions?

Thanks guys!

moonlight, because I've already paid too much for this guitar....
If I sell the neck on eBay and buy another one I need to pay more money for customs taxes in my country... it is a long story...

Re: Ibanez Prestige Neck 2550 thickness and Trust rod groove

I would stick with the guitar Dimi - sometimes it just takes a little getting used to when we get a new guitar,,,,,when I got my 2550z I didn't like the neck at first because I found the neck too wide (I was used to the thinner necks on my strats and older RG & Jem necks) but now I find myself reaching for it for certain songs and it's growing on me...

I get it. Sometimes I see guys asking about making modifications that will ruin the value of a guitar without thinking about alternatives. Sound like you have good reasons. I hope it turns out just right for you.

You plan to file it down from the fretboard side?

No, I want to sand down the back of the neck, not the fretboard,
Maybe even to change a little of the shape. It is too square now.

Dimi, you can absolutely sand down to the thickness your wanting. You have more than 6mm of wood til you get to the truss rod cavity. Taking off 1mm-1.5mm will have no adverse affects. I've personally taken off up to 2mm on a Super Wizard....it was already at 17 and 19. I took it to 16mm/17mm.........it's been playing strong daily for two years.

Re: Ibanez Prestige Neck 2550 thickness and Trust rod groove

Thanks, RGTFanatic!
Just measured at 12th fret and it is 20mm.

Do you know what truss rod system they used on Prestige 2550Z necks?
Is it only one steel rod, or there are some carbon secondary additional plates around the main rod?

I mean if I want to change a little the squire shape to more smooth, boat like shape
To not disclose something unexpected...
Thanks!

Re: Ibanez Prestige Neck 2550 thickness and Trust rod groove

You welcome Dimi. As far as I know, the 2550 does NOT have the extra re-enforcing rods. Only the 3550 and above.........

Either way, your in good shape taking it down to 17mm @ the 1st and 19mm @ the 12th. You'll have plenty of "meat" left, even if you happen to go down further than that.

Re: Ibanez Prestige Neck 2550 thickness and Trust rod groove

Yeah, I think there will be no problem.
Just need to figure out how much to sand the D shape of the neck...
I think to use my finger board radius profile as sanding block for the back of the neck.
I need more smooth feel. Now it "stops" my thumb finger
The old Super Wizard neck shape was much better.
I don't know why they changed it...
