The inside of a RG450DX - help with parts please! :)

So ive have this guitar for abt 12years, and finally got round to cleaning it! :P

took the pickguard off, and was pleased to find that the cavity was painted with shielding paint!

had a look at the wiring etc, as im looking at upgrading the pups etc in the near future, and this is what i could see:

my questions are:

what switch have i got? the only marking i could see was "cortec"

the pups only seem to have one wire coming from them - if i was to upgrade, would the switch support the 4 wires that more dimarzios seem to have?

what is the green capacitor on the tone pot? is that stock on all MIJ ibbys?

thanks

rich

Each pickup on your Ibanez has two wires running to the switch, Red and White.
They also have a ground going to the back of the pot.

A real 5 wire Dimarzio will go like this.

Bare wire and Green to back of the pot.

Red wire to the spot on the switch where the white wire is.

Black and White wires to th spot on the switch where the Red wire is.

When you hook up your single coil it could very a little depending on what single coil you buy, if you change it out.

Your Hums have 3 wires inside the larger shield (red/neck grn/bridge) each one has:

red= hot output
white= coil tap
bare= ground

Your switch is part#3PS1CGAE5. It will work fine with your dimarzios

the cap determines the cutoff point for the tone knob.....it's on all Ibby's (and all other guitars)

That is what I did with mine.
I think I have the Red and White mixed because the volume won't roll off, it just cuts off.
That is why I am thinking the opposite of what your saying would be correct.

ok wicked! thanks guys!

would there be any significant improvement in upgrading the switch? - i dont want any set up other than how it already works - no funky series or parallel stuff going on! :P

Other than longevity, there's no real advantage to a better quality switch. These cheaper switches are easier to overheat when soldering, but if your careful you should have no problems. If you want something simple, sturdy, and long lasting.....get a fender 5-way for strats. They're tough as tanks and easy to work with.

if you are looking to upgrade its probably a good idea to think about the pots,
often they get scratchy or crackly after about 10 years, and they are easy and cheap to replace.

wont make any difference to the tone but it will be annoying if they get stiff or noisy in a year or so.

i think they're already a bit stiff, and the vol is definitely a bit scratchy already!

but my plan was to change them out when i did the pickups!
