Interesting old neck joint

Some of you may already be familiar with this, but despite years of Ibanez-watching and collecting, it's new to me. Oddly, I actually owned two of this model (540S-CT6), but they were among my first Iby's and I never realized how the neck joint was constructed. I suppose I never took the necks off or examined them closely. Anyway, take a look at the neck in this auction:

Pretty strange, huh? The Maxxas and then this model were the earliest models to have an AANJ-like neck joint, but they were a bit different than what came later. I suppose they were still experimenting with the best design when these were produced in the late 80s.

Cheers,
Bert

Edit: here are some pics

Re: Interesting old neck joint

that is a funky looking joint! Kinda reminds me of the PRS bolt on flange.

Yeah, it's weird. No doubt it cost more to build than the relatively simple AANJ that we're all familiar with. It does seem like this design would have some additional lateral stability though.

Funny coincidence that there's currently a Maxxas neck for sale in the classifieds that is constructed the same as this one.

Re: Interesting old neck joint

The current Billy Sheehan basses have joints something like this actually.

Re: Interesting old neck joint

I have seen a similar thing before, namely a MAXXAS neck mounted to a modified Saber body. This weirdo is shown here:

And it was discussed here:

I believe that the owner is also a Jemsite member. Maybe he stumbles upon this thread and shares his thoughts.

I believe the Vinnie Moore model used that neck joint, as well.

Re: Interesting old neck joint

Sort of like a cross between a tenon joint and a conventional bolt on.

It's not one of those fancy Zero-Tension necks that they put on the US Customs is it?

No, those were altogether different -- easily identified by the wire band below the headstock where it could be detached. That was a pretty controversial system and not particularly well received, but at least they were reaching outside the traditional box.

I'm guessing that Ibanez experimented with this staggered heel design and then decided that the regular AANJ joint was adequate. From the posts here, it sounds like this design was used on the 540S-CT6, the Maxxas, and the VM's.

That is correct. I found some photos of a VM1SH with detached neck:

Interesting! But the Yamaha Attitude bass line and the Ibanez MAXXAS share one thing; they bear the hallmark of designer Rich Lasner.
