Locking nut doesn't lock!

This is really odd, bought a nice secondhand RG550 and noticed I couldn't lock the E/A nut clamp it started to tighten then would go loose again.

Me thinks knackered thread in the nut...anyhoo noticed the other 2 clams could be tightened BUT the machine heads could alter the string tuning when clamped (??)

Never seen a clamped top nut that allows the machine heads to alter the tuning - very strange.

So I bought a replacement nut, fitted it and now I can lock all 3 clamps at the nut but the machine heads still can alter the tuning no matter how tight the clamps are locked!!

Never experienced this before, on the JEM the machine heads make no difference once the nut clamps are locked but on this RG550 even a new top nut assembly doesn't stop the machine heads altering the tuning.

Why is this, can/does it need to be fixed and if I use the trem does that mean the tuning will be out??

Did does not make sense. If the strings can move under the pads, then the pads are far from locked. This or you bought a totally different design.

If I were you, I would try to fix the original nut. Take it to a machine shop who can do M4 heli-coil. That's all you need really, to fix the low/ (bass side) thread on the original nut.

exaclty but on the original nut the other strings could be adjusted by the machine heads when clamped as well, and I do mean clamped to the point of risking stripping the thread in the nut!

Hmmm, in this case grooves had been developed either on the nut's top or the bottom of the pads.
The newer one does exactly the same?

Re: Locking nut doesn't lock!

yes the brand new nut does exactly the same thing!

I tried interchanging the new clamps with the old ones and no difference, extremely weird...

Are you sure you are not doing anything wrong? The torque applied should be as if you were turning the alen with one finger.

Re: Locking nut doesn't lock!

it doesn't matter how it is tightened, gently until the resistance is felt or until it doesn't turn anymore the string still slip in the nut, something which seems against the laws of physics!

Tried turning the clamps round as well and using the clamps off the old nut no difference!

Re: Locking nut doesn't lock!

There is like a straight line on the top of the pad (clamp). This should be parallel to the strings.

This literally doesn't make any sense.

Maybe you can post a picture? Both of the nut "locked" and the underside of the string pads?

Re: Locking nut doesn't lock!

Is the nut mounted from the back? If it is, are the allen bolts coming too far through the nut and stopping the pads sitting flush, had this on a lot of EVH's.

the OP said it is a top mounted nut, or so he implied.

Re: Locking nut doesn't lock!

it is screwed into the neck from the top not the bottom as on my lovely 777VDY!

Really does defy logic, maybe the guitar is cursed?
