My FIRST Neck Build :D

As the title says I'm working on my first neck from scratch, it going to be AANJ for an RG 470 body I'm going to do a fabric top on. Nothing spectacular as far as the wood goes since it's my first time I didn't want to ruin any expensive pieces.

It's five pieces, Maple in the middle, 2 small veneer strips of Walnut, and Red Oak for the outside pieces. Should look good if it all comes together, the oak has some nice grain to it. Since I've never even glued 2 pieces of wood together before, this should be fun...

HAHA!! I know right, they are cheap $15 for a 6 pack at Lowes

Not a whole lot more done, glued the rest of the headstock on and did some tracing. Think I'm going reverse headstock on this one thanks to GUITARMAGEDDON's project

IDK if you'd want to study my build... You'd be better off going over to projectguitar.com and studying from the pros over there

Re: My FIRST Neck Build :D

So one neck project got side tracked by another neck project...

I am replacing the fret board on an old square heel RG550 neck. It will be going on my modified RG560 project.

Taking the board off was much easier than I thought it would be

Total time with the iron was about 30 mins

Close up..

Almost off...

OFF!!!

Re: My FIRST Neck Build :D

And here's the board that's going on it. From AI Guitars on the Evilbay. It did need quite a bit of work to get the inlays to actually fit in the routes as they were too rounded off in the corners. I used a utility knife with a new blade and sliced the corners sharp which magically made the inlays fit right... Go figure...

All glued in with epoxy:

Took them down with a file and then 220 grit sandpaper about as far as I care to go until I get up and go make a radius block to finish it off...

Re: My FIRST Neck Build :D

And sanded down and radiused...

There are a few rough spots and I need to fill in a couple places, but not too bad for my first time. It looks great until you look really really close up

Re: My FIRST Neck Build :D

Thanks man!

Here she is after a ride on my new (to me) band saw... I just need to prep the old neck and glue it up at this point. Then it's on to my first full on fret job. I level and crown them all the time, but I haven't installed new ones yet
