Need some advice about tunings

Okay, I have 6 guitars currently, and most of them are standard tuning (4 of them, 2 are Eb).

So here's my dilemma:

I want to know what other tunings I should experiment with. I've done D tuning before but that was before I was really interested in that low of a tuning (I did C# standard once, interesting to say the least). Now, my issue is that I want to make all of my guitars different in some way (besides obvious stuff like pups). Here's what I have already decided:

Carvin JB200: Main axe, Eb tuning
RG2550: Eb tuning, my main Ibanez

RG560: Poor Man's AT100, Standard tuning
RC1720M (wait, what? ): this guitar will also be standard, once I get it in March.

So I am not sure what to do about these 3 guitars:

RG1550
RG580
RG685

Since Steve Vai did use D tuning for the song Gravity storm and I have GS pups in the 1550, I'm thinking that this guitar should be D tuned. Not sure if Drop D would be better for this guitar or not My main issue is that this guitar has an AMAZING blues tone when split with GS bridge and Ibanez S1, so E standard is an option for this as well.

RG580 is my reverse headstock Evo equipped monster. I love this guitar and am thinking of making this Eb like my carvin and rg2550, but can't decide.

RG685: Anything goes with this one as I need to get new pups for it anyway but can't really decide what I should use on this. Drop C#?

Now, I don't like super dropped tunings like B or whatever, and about the lowest I want to go is Drop C# (as Matias Kupiainen uses Drop C# in Stratovarius now). What does everyone think are tunings that I should have at least 1 of based on what I've decided already?

Re: Need some advice about tunings

first, ask your self : are you going to cover any songs or play in a band that needs those alternate tunings?

For me E and Eb are enough.
most of the songs I play are using those two.

Drop C is a favorite of mine. I always have a few guitars with that one. I say definitely make one of those that. For strings, 11's seem to work well for it on the RG's.

One song I play is in D (Starry Eyes by Motley Crue) but almost everything else is either Eb or E.

Re: Need some advice about tunings

I'm a big fan of Nightwish, their most recent albums are in D.
But I don't have any single guitar in D.
I just play it in Eb If I want to learn the songs.

I'd guess put 10 set and tune it to D, it may feel like using 09 tuning to Eb.

What a random Motley song. Love it. Great song though.

I have a bunch of guitars too, here's what I do

JEM 7V- Standard
RG1570 w/ Evos- Standard (so I can play Vai without abusing the JEM, basically)
RG570- 1/2 Step
Kramer Striker- Drop D
BC Rich Warlock - D Standard
Epi LP100 - Drop C
Schecter Omen 7 - 1/2 Step
Taylor Acoustic - Standard

If you want a very interesting tuning, try this (preferably on a guitar without a locking trem in case you hate it)

BADGBE

Yup, drop the E to a B.

Yeah, you're right.

I use 10s for eb. That extra punch is really nice.

Yep, random but easy to learn and lots of minor 3rd power chords I love the sound of those.

I only have trems so that won't be a possibilty

I'm thinking of havimg 1 guitar in drop d, then the rest eb and e. Just for learning how to use drop tuning effectively.

Re: Need some advice about tunings

My guitars:
s540: Eb
rg570: E
r540: E
squier japan: E
jem7vwh: E
rg7620: A standard
rga 121: C# standard

Those are my tunings and I stick to them. Occasionally drop B the rga.

Re: Need some advice about tunings

All my guitars are on E std, except for the universe which is B std. Can drop to drop-D and drop-A easily.

Re: Need some advice about tunings

c# standard = the most brutal and most used metal key it seems.

Eb open tuning = to write interesting stuff to jam your Eb guitars over.

Re: Need some advice about tunings

I don't think C# standard is brutal. I've done it before. And if you want real a real metal key, Eb is used by almost EVERYONE.

Re: Need some advice about tunings

You should have a drop D for sure... but thats not too hard to do in a few minutes. Mine are all standard except for a Les Paul and RG520 at Eb. Been playing old Van Halen on the RG520... the Tone Zone sounds killer in Eb!
