noisy switch and pot

Hi two of my older guitars are a bit "static" noisey one on the pickup selector switch and one on the volume dial.

Do I need to replace these components? or just get some kind of electrical contact cleaner in there and work it in a bit?

Thanks,
Phil

Re: noisy switch and pot

Try the contact cleaner first. If that doesn't solve the problem--change out the switch and pot.

This^^^^ contact cleaner should do nicely. If not, switches and pots are cheap..... they also give you an excellent reason to tear you guitar apart for a thorough cleaning

just out of interest (coz im gonna be doing a similar thing soon!) do you just spray contact cleaner on and leave it and its done, or do you spray it on then use an old toothbrish or similar?

Re: noisy switch and pot

Spray it and let it set a few seconds then work the control back and forth several times. Spray it again and repeat. Then let it dry out before you plug it back up and try it out.

Re: noisy switch and pot

I agree with gideond, however, I've never let any electronics dry out before using and I've never had any problems. Most cleaners have something similar to alcohol or have alcohol in them and it dries rather quickly.

If you have a tech nearby, they should do this for free for you. It only takes a minute or two.
