PGM wiring question - Please help, pretty please!!

Greetings!

I picked up a Lollar single coil to put in the neck of my PGM 301 and it sounds really thin and I was wondering if I did this correctly?

PAF PRO = 4 conducto
Lollar = 2 conductor

I simply ran the hot lead from the lollar to the pin where the RED wire from the PAF PRO was attached to the 5 way. It switches fine but just sounds very thin and shrill. Do I need to jump some leads on the 5 way to compensate for it being only 2 conductor?

Any input is greatly GREATLY appreciated!

Many thanks,

~J

well, it's much less powerful than bridge pickup, so you may be hearing a huge drop in volume when switching to neck. Maybe that's the problem

The volume is right on / equal to my bucker but it just has really shrill highs and no bass like you would expect with a SC in the neck.

many thanks for the reply!

guess it would be easier to simply ask

How do I wire a 2 conductor single coil in neck position to a VLx91 switch?

I would also like to add that Iíve thoroughly searched the older posts for over 45 minutes and found nothing in regard to wiring a 2 conductor single coil in the neck : v (

Re: PGM wiring question - Please help, pretty please!!

Sounds to me like you've wired it correctly.

Issue is, was this pickup designed primarily to go in a Strat?

Strats have 250K pots, where as guitars primarily with humbuckers have 500K pots. The higher the resistance the pot, the brighter, and perhaps the more shrill a pickup will sound.

I have a feeling you are just hearing how that particular pickup will sound when its paired with a 500K pot.

I wonder (and I've only just thought of it, it very well may not work), if you put a 250K resistor inline with the pickup 'hot' wire and pickup selector, whether or not that will throw in the equivelant resistance you would have if you had just a 250K pot in the guitar?

Might be worth a try, and would only cost a few cents.

Sorry I really didn't think hard enough about that idea, still waking up. It'll probably just halve the volume.

it wouldn't be equivalent or even close. When volume is maxed you would dump 1/3 of the signal because you'd form a voltage divider with 250K inline and 500K to ground.
You could fake it with a 500K resistor between outer lugs of the pot and it would work as a 250K pot when maxed, but pot taper would be slightly altered.

Thats why I responded with my retraction of the idea after I wrote it. Didn't think it fully through.

Thank you guys so much for solving the mystery! I'm running a Dimarzio mega drive in the bridge. You guys think the humbucker would sound like crap if I jumped the outer lugs making it a 250k?

I've also read that I can put a resistor in parrallel with the single coil however I can't wrap my mind on how to wire it.

Re: PGM wiring question - Please help, pretty please!!

I reckon if you try a 250K pot setup there is a chance your humbucker might get a bit muddy. The good news is you can solve that issue to some extent by putting a 0.047uf or lower (maybe 0.01uf, anything in-between) capacitor between the humbucker's hot wire and the switch. I have info on it in the DIY section of my blog if you want to try the cap. It's in an article called "Taming the Tone Zone". There's a few parts to it.

Hope that might help.

Re: PGM wiring question - Please help, pretty please!!

Many thanks man! I really want to stick with the 500k pot and just modify the single coil circuit if at all possible. After all the discussion, what's your best advise for that?

1,000,000,000 thanks once again man.

OK, I think I got it!

Taken from here: http://www.thegearpage.net/board/arc.../t-822758.html

Will try adding a 500k resistor in parallel from the bridge pickup's hot lead to ground

Re: PGM wiring question - Please help, pretty please!!

wired up the 470k resistor from hot lead to ground and it fixed completely. Even volume, fat tone and the pot roll off wasn't affected at all. Loving this HSS config
