Please help needed!!

Hi there

Im having a very annoying problem with my 7V and desperately need advice. Ive recently taken my Jem to my local music shop (well trusted in my area) and it re-strung (strings all well stretched in) and a set up adjustment.

However,

When I depress the tremolo bar, the tone of the G B & E strings lowers a few semi tones

Likewise when I pull up the tremolo bar, this raises the overall tuning a few semitones higher

... This is really very annoying and I can't seem to resolve the issue, no matter how many times I re-tune and re-stretch the stings.

The guy in the shop says there is nothing wrong with my trem however there must be something I can do to stop this very annoying issue!!

Your help as always is greatly appreciated!!

Re: Please help needed!!

Sorry I'm not very clued up so you will have to bear with me

Are you referring to the locking nut? If so I've made sure this is tightened securely

Thanks for the reply

Not only the pads but the 2 screws that hold it to the neck too.

Agreed this is fairly common but be careful not to over tighten those screws (the ones that go through the neck) - that is how people get cracks in their neck.

Another common issue, especially if it was just cleaned & set up, is lack of lubrication on the tremolo studs where the trem knive edges contact them. A little Chapstick works wonders here an is clean & cheap.

I'll be the one to ask the obvious question:

Are the stud locks locked??

Re: Please help needed!!

How old is the guitar? Maybe the knife edges in the trem are due to be replaced? On that note, which trem do you have?

Another possibility is the stud anchors have become loose in the body. This is common on older guitars or if you are a particularly vigorous trem user. This is a much more serious issue, but is fixable. Rich has put up a good outline of the fix procedure in the tech section of his site (Ibanez Rulez). Speaking of which, have you gone through that tech section yet? He offers good advice on troubleshooting this exact problem (along with many others). It really is a must-read.

Re: Please help needed!!

Dive makes them flat, pull makes them sharp. Yep, sounds like anchors rocking back and forth. ^

Re: Please help needed!!

Gents, the problem was the knfe edges. There was a bit of wear that needed to be filed down, that and a bit of lubrication and im all set and the problem appears to have been resolved! Thanks again for your help much appreciated
