Possible Edge III replacements 2020

I know there are a few old threads discussing this, but they are all old and contradictory.

This will be my first mod project and I am getting an old RG350DX and I plan on making some upgrades to it, including the bridge.

It comes with an Edge III and I have been torturing myself reading through different sources online and I just seem to be getting nowhere, so I would really appreciate some guidance from someone patient enough to post here and has experience with replacing Edge III, and if I luck out maybe someone has done it on the same model.

I have been looking at the Edge Pro, the Low-Pro Edge and Original Floyd Rose.

I've never had a guitar with a floating bridge so I have absolutely no experience to rely on.

It would be great if I could find out:

1) Will I need to adjust the cavity size or drill new holes for any of the above-stated options
2) Which one performs better (regardless of any routing needed in the cavity or drilling)
3) Is it really worth considering adjusting cavity sizes or drilling new holes for the sake of a different bridge
4) Are there any other makes and models of alternatives to the Edge III that require no adjustments, or worth making the adjustments for?

Again, I know there are other threads and I have read most of them but I a really getting nowhere so I'm just hoping to clear it up.

P.S. I'm also going to be doing mods of the electrics, including adding a push/pull so if anyone has experience with this and wouldn't mind sharing experience and tips for a first-timer, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

As far as the tremolo, no matter what any other thread states.. almost all agree that a Gotoh trem is drop in.

Unfortunately the edge and edge pro need modifications to fit.

I once changed a edge iii for a edge pro and I had to widen the trem posts by 1mm and extend the butt end of the trem cut to allow the extra space of the string lock screws.

I also had to shave a few mm in random locations for the underside of the trem block to float freely without rubbing.

For your wiring, what is your goal.

A push pull is easy but doesn't say at all what your looking to achieve.

It's been long established an edge pro is a direct replacement, and there are no string lock screws sticking out, they're on top of the trem. If the block touches something inside a little relieving is easy but is rare and typically because the inside routs of indo guitars are very rough finished. The stud spacing is the same.

Not sure what the issue with mine was.

I remember it being a pain.

I can't surmise, but I've sold well over 100 of them as ED3 replacements and not a single negative comment about fit. But they are not cheap and you're still using the sh!t ED3 studs unless you do surgery, and if you replace the anchors you really should replace with the lockers from an Edge.

I def changed out the studs.

I remember having to pry them off the metal retaining bar that was hidden under the foam.

I mean I bought my edge from you, I was happy with the result but there was a few spots that rubbed.

Maybe it was cause it was a pretty old used model.

It may not have even came with a edge 3 stock.
I think it was a 98/99

The strap anchor is held on with 2 cover screws in the middle and slips right out. It would not have been original so there would be your problem. It didn't start production until 2005.

Re: Possible Edge III replacements 2020

Thank you both for the replies! You have alleviated a bit of the pain I've been going through when trying to decide.

I've now completely psyched myself out of the wiring job I'll need to do. I've absolutely no idea what I'm doing and I'm doubting if I even begin to understand the different wiring combinations, what wiring diagrams even mean, the use of capacitors etc.

Any advice on sources of information for complete beginners?

Re: Possible Edge III replacements 2020

I've seen this before and I don't think it is exactly what I'm going for. I don't even have a basic grasp of the wiring set up of a guitar which I think is my basic issue, so I' trying to find someone who is willing to go through some of the basics first.
